"So...what's on the agenda for you today?" Jay smirked as he turned his head to the side and gave his wife a teasing look. "I'm thinking of going to the mall with Kim...I need to get Parker's birthday shopping done." She informed her husband.
Jay groaned, he knew that Erin and Kim and malls did not go together well...at least for him. Last time they had gone to the mall, Erin had blown through close to a thousand dollars on birthday presents for Evelyn Ruzek's ninth birthday, which consisted of mostly American Girl shit. He didn't get it, why spend so much on a doll that they'll get sick of in a few months? His daughter was obsessed with those dolls as well; she was constantly begging for the newest dolls and accessories.
Despite them costing ridiculous amounts of money, it was incredibly hard for Jay to say no to his little girl. The light that shone in her eyes every time she unwrapped a new doll or a new accessory, melted his heart. He loved seeing his daughter happy, and would stop at nothing to make her happy, even if that included spending $200 on a doll.
"Please, just make sure we have at least some money after today." He teased, earning a punch in the arm from his wife. "You know I can't promise! This is Parker we're talking about, all the kid wants is hockey equipment and video games! That new Xbox he's been asking for is over $300!" Erin complained, earning a raised eyebrow look from Jay. "What can I say, kids got expensive taste."
Ten minutes later, he pulled up into Kim's driveway. They were using her car to go to the mall, since Jay was taking their Suburban. He put the car into park, and just before Erin was about to get out of the car, he put a hand on her shoulder.
She turned to face him. "Yeah baby?" They got lost in each others eyes for a minute, although it felt like forever. Neither of them could get enough of each other, they loved each other to death. "Be careful today, okay? Weather calls for a lot of rain, and me and you both know how crazy your driving can be." He decided to add a joke to light-up the seriousness of the conversation.
"Don't worry baby," she planted a kiss on his lips. "We'll be careful."
Erin and Kim decided to stop for a quick lunch at Olive Garden, both women hating the overpriced food court meals- they agreed they'd be spending enough money already on many of Parker's lavish requests. As they sat down to eat, Erin made sure her phone was on, in case of emergency.
After spending two hours at Olive Garden, they finally left for the mall.
As Erin and Kim entered the mall, Erin made a quick mental note to text Hank to remind him once again that he was to pick up Annie from school. She knew he would remember- Hank Voight had a real soft spot for his granddaughter, and she was just as fond of him. Annie thought her grandpa hung the moon, something that often irritated Jay. But despite thinking that her grandpa hung the moon, her father was the little girl's hero.
Kim's voice broke Erin from her trance. "So, where are we going to first?" Kim had a pretty good idea of the sort of stuff Parker would be asking for. Even though her son was one year older, him and Parker shared many of the same interests, including video games and sports.
Erin quickly regained her thoughts and processed what had just been said to her. "Maybe EB Games?" Erin suggested, knowing that more than half of the Parker's birthday wish list consisted of video games and accessories for his Play Station 4 controllers. Kim only laughed in response, "I feel your struggle." She put a hand on Erin's shoulder, earning a laugh from her.
Voight pulled up to Annie's school, and right away realized how difficult it would be to find a parking space- the lot as well as the pickup area were absolutely packed with Minivans and SUV's. After minutes of searching, he finally found a spot near the end of the lot.
He walked to the doors and joined the other parents who were all waiting for their kids. He stood awkwardly amongst the chatting fathers and laughing mothers, waiting anxiously for the school bell to ring. To pass some time, he decided to send a quick text to Erin and Jay.
To: Erin Halstead
Hey Erin. Just letting you know I'm waiting at Annie's school now.
He glanced at the watch on his wrist as he sent the text, noticing that he still had a few minutes to kill before Annie would be dismissed from school. He opened Jay's contact and sent him a brief text.
To: Jay Halstead
Picking up Annie now, already told Erin. Enjoy the rest of the show ;)
After he sent that text, the school bell finally rang. He shoved his phone into his pocket and waited until he saw Annie.
"Grandpa!" The smile on his granddaughter's face lit up his world. She quickly ran from the door into his arms. "There's my favourite granddaughter!" Hank exclaimed as picked up the little girl and lifted some stray strands of her hazel hair out of her face. "Silly grandpa! I'm your only granddaughter!" Annie squealed as Hank set her on her feet and grabbed a hold of her hand before walking her off to the car.
Annie was about to get in the back seat where she was used to sitting, until Voight stopped her. "You don't have to sit here today, baby!" He laughed as the little girl's forehead creased, it looked identical to her mothers. "But grandpa, I always sit in the back! Mommy and daddy said that's where little girl's like me are supposed to sit!" For a seven-year-old, Annie was sharp-witted.
Hank sighed, he knew when it came to negotiating with Annie, he was practically talking to a brick wall- she had her mother's stubbornness after all.
"It's okay just this one time, Annie. It'll be our secret." He brought his index finger to his lip as if he was sealing the secret. With that, Annie's eyes lit up at the thought of being able to sit in the passenger seat like her big brother often did.
"Yay!" She squealed, as Hank walked around to the other side of the car and helped her into the passenger seat of his Cadillac. He helped buckle her seatbelt and get the smiling girl settled into her 'exclusive' seat, ignoring the feeling in the pit of his gut. There was that uncomfortable feeling of unease in his stomach- something about the atmosphere was unsettling. But he chose to ignore whatever it was he was feeling- he didn't want to ruin his granddaughter's happiness.
"This is so fun, grandpa!" Hank took his eyes off the road and glanced at the happy little girl next to him. His eyes were only off the road for a second...the second that was about to change his life forever.
As soon as he returned his attention to the road, he noticed an 18-wheeler that was seconds away from plowing into the passenger side of the car.
It all happened so fast, the sound of metal crashing together deafened him. Before he had the chance to comprehend what had just happened, his entire vision was blurred by a blinding white light, and he was dragged into darkness.
A/N sorry it seems really rushed... I just didn't want to add too much fluff.
So...what happened to Voight and Annie? Will they be okay? Find out in the next chapter, coming soon ;)
