Blair's POV
I was hearing words again. People kept talking.
"......King......Problem.....awake.....shot......broken....." I felt something poke my arm and then another poke in my other arm.
I slowly gained consciousness and tried to open my eyes but the were to heavy. I managed to move my finger and heard everyone gasp.
I opened my eyes and adjusted to the light.
"Blair your awake." My dad had tears in his eyes. Then it hit me. All at once I felt pain shooting in my arm and my entire leg felt as if it was on fire.
I cried out in pain and the doctor came in and gave me another shot. My dad said something to the doctor and then the doctor left.
After a couple minutes all of my brothers came in.
"Blair we thought you would never wake up." Zach said.
"How long was I out?" I questioned but no one had the chance to answer before the doctor came in and told everyone to leave.
"You need to rest Blair. I will let your family see you in the morning." The doctor said before he left.
3 hours later
"And then he punched him in the face because he kissed his cat." The boys were telling me about the movie they saw.
"Than he picked up his gun and shot the moose on the wall. You have to watch it it is the best movie ever." Half an hour ago my brothers broke into my hospital room and started talking about the movie.
"Guys I have to get some sleep." I told them. They nodded and set a book down on the chair beside me. After they left I picked the book and realized it was a family photo album. I flipped through it and saw pictures of the boys' first day of school, birthdays and other major events. Then there was Mom.
I never knew her but I did know everyone loved her. She was pretty, sweet and caring. As the only girl in the house it was hard for me to grow up like a girl. Everything was harder for me. I am short, so I can't reach anything my brothers can, and I am home schooled.
While I was growing up my father always had a fear of me getting hurt by boys and bullies, so I was taught at home. I did manage to convince my father to let me go to school for my senior year.
As I got closer to the end of the album I saw more and more of Mom in different stages of pregnancy. I turned to the last page. An ultrasound at almost nine months and a picture of Dad holding me and crying. At the bottom of the last page was a simple sentence that changed everything. In loving memory of Amelia King. Mother, friend and sister.
A week later
I was glad to get home and with only a few cracks in my ribs. I worried about my horses because no one wanted to ride them while I was out.
As soon as Dad pulled into the drive way, I hoped out and went out back to see my horses.
"Hi Flurries. Where is Midnight?" I asked my white mare. Midnight trotted out with hay in her mouth.
"There she is." I looked around and opened the gate when I noticed no one followed me out. Instead of climbing the fence, I opened the gate and walked in the pen. The horses came right up to me.
Looking at Midnight reminded me of a picture I saw in the album. My mom was barrel racing on a jet black horse. I remember my brothers showing me pictures of the horse before Dad sold it when I was two.
"They called her Nightmare. One of the fastest horses ever. Mom won race after race with her. Together they were unbeatable. A nightmare to all the other contestants." They told me as I looked up at them with curiosity.
"What happened?" I asked.
"She became so evil she... BOO!!!" He jumped at me and I screamed and hit him with the pillow I was laying on.
I used to wish to be a barrel racer but my dream was crushed when my entire family shot me down, but the boys yelled at me when they found out about the bull riding. I heard about someone in a town over that taught both. I had enough money saved up to pay for it myself.
No one knew about the final King. The only girl in the family will be the only one bull riding. I will have to wait until the next fair year, but it will be worth it.
