Chapter 2
When we got to my "surprise place" I quickly found out it was somewhere I wouldn't want to be. It is located right across from my restaurant and it's a place where someone like me wouldn't go in to. It's called The Scrubet. It's a local bar where bands (that probably don't have very bright futures) play. I can already tell just by looking at this place that I am NOT going to enjoy this.
We get in and Jenny and Todd find us a small table towards the mid section of the bar. It was still a good enough view to see and listent to the band.
Not even five minutes of being there, Jenny sees a hot guy and tells me she's going to go after him and make him hers by the end of the night. That is definitely not something that I would do, but I sighed in admiration of her confidence. I then watched her disappear into the crowed, going after what she wanted.
I then felt someone watching me so I turned to my left and sure enough, Todd was staring at me with a serious look on his face. "You could do it, you know," he said with such sincerity to me. "What?" I asked. "Don't play this game, Lauren. You could have any guy you wanted if you would just get some confidence and believe for about ten seconds that you're beautiful. Hell, you're gorgeous! Why can't you just make an effort to make yourself be happy?" I studied is face for a moment, wondering where all of this was coming from. Todd wasn't one to be so open with his feelings.
"Why do you care so much, Todd?"
"I care about you, and we're 25. It's time for us all to be happy and find the one."
I looked at him for a moment and said, "I don't think happiness is for me. I want someone to love me, but I just don't see it happening. Most of all, I want to love someone... but people have let me down so much that it's not even worth trying anymore. I don't want to get hurt. I've had bad male influences all my life, and I don't want to go down that road again."
Realizing this was probably the most open and honest I've ever been with Todd, I quickly excused myself and told him I was going to the bar to get a drink.
When I got to the bar, I took a seat on one of the many empty stools in this place. I looked around me and noticed how rustic this place looks. "Surely this place doesn't get much business," I thought. It looked like it was stuck in the 60's and needed lots of repair to simple damages on the ceiling, the wall, and heck this bar could just use a simple wipe down.
"What could I get you on this fine night, ma'am?"
"A martini with a twist," I replied.
He nodded at me, and all of a sudden I feel an arm nudge my shoulder. "Todd, I don't really feel like talking-"
"Hey love, the name's Vince, not Todd," I heard a very masculine voice beside me.
Next to me, I saw a gorgeous man with electric blue eyes, short brown hair, and very large biceps. He had tan skin, but you could tell it wasn't just a summer tan, he was naturally dark. He was wearing a grey, v-neck, t-shirt that was tight around his biceps and he was sporting jeans. He looked like a cool, gorgeous man... definitely high in society. Why the heck would he sit next to ME in this bar with all of these empty stools around us, talking to ME?
He has looking at me as if I was supposed to have something to say to him since he introduced himself. "Hhey, my name is Lauren."
My martini landed in front of me with a thud. I quickly threw all of my attention to my martini, staring at it, and wondering why this man is beside me. I must have stared a hole through the martini because all of a sudden, I saw a masculine hand slowly move MY martini in his direction, forcing me to look up at him. "Great," I thought. "He definietly thinks I'm an idiot."
He was just looking at me with an amused look on his face. I couldn't help but look into those beatiful blue eyes. He was so good looking I almost couldn't stand it.
"So, who's this Todd that you don't feel like speaking to?"
"Just a friend," I replied.
"Are you always this nervous?" he asked me.
"I'm not nervous. Give me back my martini."
"Do you not want to be here?" he asked.
"I did until about 3 minutes ago," I said sharply.
"Why so sharp?"
"WHY do you ask so many questions?" I snapped.
"If you would, love, I'd like for you to see things in my perspective. See, I walk into this bar expecting it to be another Friday night... You know, have a beer or two, chat with the bartender, listen to a couple of awful songs played by an awful band, look around to see if anyone's worth me talking to (and about 95% of the time there's not, trust me), then go home to watch an episode or two of Everybody Loves Raymond and call it a night. But tonight, I walked in and there's this beautiful woman sitting at the bar... All by herself! She looks as if she's disappointed, maybe even frustrated, or maybe even lonely. So I, being the man I am, I want to talk to her, to get to know her, and maybe... just maybe be someone that will make her look and feel happy at least while she sits at the bar, staring a hole into her martini."
He gives me a grin and then adds, "Because love, we all know this band is awful enough to make anyone down in the dumps."
"Well you're wrong," I say. "I'm not here for someone to come up with a brilliant story like that just so they can hit on me. It just so happenes I am here with two friends."
I turn around expecting to see Jenny and Todd somewhere in sight, but they both completeley vanished. They probably both saw a gorgeous man sitting beside me and split so I wouldn't have anywhere to run to or try to get away from this man.
While grinning at me he said, "Yeah, well I see your friends are probably busy. So, unless you drove here yourself, it looks like you're stuck with me, love."
I couldn't help but send a small smile his way.
