When I awoke I was in a white room resting on a bed. Everything had an unusual perfection to it, and my head hurt. The last thing I could remember seeing were glimpses of Cameron. We were on our way home, and then... I don't remember anything after that.
"Sage." I heard my name called, and snapped my neck to the door. No one entered the white room so I slowly sat up and walked toward it.
Behind the door was an upset looking Cameron. "What the heck are you doing? You shouldn't be walking around or anything."
"But, you called my name..."
"I expected you to respond, not come and open the damn door!" Cameron ran a hand through his hair and laid me back onto the bed. "Your mom is driving me to go get Subway so you can eat, I'll call someone to wait with you."
My mom? She was out of the country... I barely understand anything else Cameron rattled on about because of the all the hammers pounding in my head.
"Cam, I'm fine, you don't need to."
"Well, I am." And just like that, the stubborn boy left me alone in the overly bright room. While hoping that he wasn't watching me, I got up from my spot and walked over to the light switch to turn off the awful lights. It helped with the throbbing.
"Sage Elizabeth Powell! Sit your ass in that bed right now!" Cameron yelled from the hallway. I simply chuckled at him, which ended up hurting really bad, and obeyed his wishes.
I took this time to look around the room. It looked like a typical hospital room; the walls were whiter than snow, there was a beeping monitor next to me. On my other side was a metal tray with a cup of water and a magazine. It was one of those stupid gossip magazines so I rolled my eyes and decided to ignore it.
Suddenly the door clicked and Cameron's head popped in the room. "I called a friend to come and sit with you while I leave but it'll take a couple of minutes for him to get here."
"Him?" Cameron tilted his head like a dog so I explained, "Well, I just figured you call Cassie. Cassie's not a he so..."
"Oh, trust me, this is better than Cassie." I mimicked Cam's head tilt but instead of explaining, he just grinned and closed the door.
I spent the next five minutes reading the stupid magazine of lies while looking out my room window occasionally to see Cam sitting on his phone playing some game, I can only assume it's Pokémon Go since there's a Pokéstop just outside, whatever that means. After sitting there for six minutes, Cameron stood up and started a conversation with someone I couldn't see.
Cameron popped his head in one last time to tell me that he was leaving and that he'd be right back, then he opened the door wider so this mystery guest could come in. The second I saw who it was, I rolled my eyes and laughed a bit. "Shouldn't you be off at school? You're class president, that's kind of more important than sitting here while some idiot Sophomore goes to get Subway."
"Well," Marcel started. "I have fourth period off and I figured coming here would be more entertaining than sitting at school watching YouTube videos. Besides, I wanted to check up on my favorite freshman."
"So I'm your favorite now? When did that happen?" I questioned laughing while sharing a smile that soon turned into a grimace as I winced at the pain coming from my abdomen.
"Are you okay? Did something happen? Should I get the nurse?"
I laughed again before wincing again and I answered, "No it's fine. It just does that sometimes."
"Oh, okay. Sorry." Marcel said before he took a seat in the corner of my small room.
"Sorry? For what?" I asked him.
"I'm not good at comforting injured people. But I'm good at talking so I figured I'd talk with you while your bud is gone."
"My 'bud'?" I wanted to laugh at the term he used but I was worried it would hurt so I kept it to a smile. How was it that he could always make me smile. Everything about the accident was a little fuzzy and a doctor hasn't come by to see me yet. From what I've learnt in my Human Anatomy and Physiology class the only thing that could cause me so much pain when I breath would be a broken rib. Hopefully the doctor can explain what is happening and stop me from self diagnosing. "Marcel, did Cameron say anything to you about what the doctors said about me?"
"Nothing specific, he just told me that I wasn't supposed to let you walk around. He said he would be back soon, and I think that your mom will be with him." Everything Marcel said made sense to me until it came to the part about my mom.
"Well, it's nice that he'll be back soon, but I don't think he'll be bringing my mom. She's still on business with my dad in Moscow. She won't be coming back until October 10th."
"Cameron told me that she flew in right when they called her, your dad too. So she'll be here." Marcel explained.
"Really? That's not like her, ditching work." I responded. Marcel, not knowing what to say, looked down at his phone, quickly replied to a text message then he slowly stood up and picked up the magazine sitting on the tray next to me.
"Ooo, there's an article about One Direction in here." He exclaimed.
"Wow, you're more of a groupie than I am. That's all lies you know." I tell him motioning toward the magazine.
"It's quality, fictional entertainment." He said with quick wit. "So, your mom was in Moscow?"
"Yeah, she was there for work and my dad was in Paris. They're always off on work, I wouldn't mind if they took me with to the cool places. Seriously, how could my dad not bring me to Paris." I paused for a second as I thought of all the beautiful things I could see there. The Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and so much more. Honestly it wasn't fair that my dad didn't bring me.
"Have you ever been to Europe?" Marcel wondered.
"I was in Venice with my broth-" I cut myself off before I shared a secret that I only shared with my closest friends.
I could tell that Marcel was about to ask further but Cameron came bouncing in. He turned on the bright lights causing me to squint and started singing "Cam Cam is back with food!" In which I responded by saying, "You're a nerd."
"It was the craziest thing, Sagey-"
"Sagey?" I questioned.
"Subway had no line!" He continued, completely ignoring me. "And it was literally just down the street, that's why we were so quick. Also, I overtook a gym on Pokémon Go; this was a very successful trip. Hey again, Marcel."
"Hello, Cameron," Marcel responded with a wide smile. "I'm going to head back to the school, I have a meeting for Student Council at 3:15. I hope you feel better Sage."
"Uh, thanks." I replied and gazed over at Cameron.
He took a deep breath and said, "Thanks for keeping an eye on the rascal. And thanks for helping when the crash first happened."
I was immediately confused. Was he there when we were hit? Did he see the accident? Was that the only reason why he was here? Assuming so, my cheeks began to heat up. How stupid are you? Why else would he be here?
"Sage?" Both of the guys in the room were looking at me, eyebrows raised.
"Sorry, what's up?"
"I just said goodbye." Marcel laughed lightly under his breath.
"Right, bye. And thanks." And with that he left, leaving me to my own thoughts about what I almost let slip. I hadn't known this guy until two weeks ago, and I already slipped up.
