The next morning, I woke up to hand covering my mouth. My eyes flew open, and I saw a dark face peering down at me.
I sit up, "Alby?"
"Got some real brains there, Greenie." Alby rolls his eyes. "Come on, I'm supposed to show ya something."
"Where's Newt?" I ask.
"Off somewhere snoring his head off, probably. Why?"
"He said he would.."
"Ah. Disappointed it's me? Don't worry," he says when I jump, "I won't take offense. And I won't tell nobody." He winks. Suddenly, I know that I'm not going to get along with this guy.
"Now come on, Greenie." He walks off, done talking. Which was fine with me. I get up and follow him in silence. I run my fingers through my hair, trying to smooth it out. It was short, shoulder length, and from the feel of it curly. But beyond that, I had no idea what I looked like. I'd have to ask Newt or Nick later.
Alby leads me to the opposite end of the Glade. The wall was covered with vines, and it was dark, making it look a little spooky.
"What's-"
"Slim it, Greenie." Alby cuts me off. I roll my eyes. Alby reaches and pulls back handful of vines, revealing a window looking out into nothingness. I didn't have time to make up a sarcastic remark before a large ball of light rolled in front of it. The light revealed a large ball of goop. I feel myself pale.
"They're called Grievers, Greenie. They live in the Maze. They're why nobody- and I mean nobody is allowed outside the walls. You got that, Greenie?" Alby asks harshly. However I'm still mesmerized by the window. Staring at it, hoping to see another Griever, I don't realize Alby's talking to me until he steps right in front of me and gets in my face.
"I said, got that, Greenie?"
I looked up at him. This annoying, no good, teenaged boy who always seems about ready to throw a temper tantrum was really getting on my nerves. I step forward, looking directly into his eyes. He was a good half-foot taller than me but at that point I couldn't care less.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Were you talking to me? I wasn't aware because my name isn't Greenie."
Alby rolls his eyes. "Do you I look like I care, Greenie. I call you what I want, you hear? And when I ask you question you answer. 2 years I been here, and I'm not gonna be getting no disrespect from a shuck Greenie who ain't been here 24 hours."
"And I ain't gonna get bullied by a no-good shmuck who thinks he's better than everybody else." By this point, we're both yelling not caring who heard us. Alby shoves me against the wall.
"You shut up, you hear Greenie?"
I glare up at him, "Greenie? I don't think I know him."
Alby looks about ready to punch me, but luckily Newt rushes over at that point.
"What's bloody going on here?" he hollers, pulling Alby away from me.
"Oh we're just having a friendly chat." I say sweetly, looking directly at Alby. He just scowls.
"Well that's just bloody fine and dandy. But next time please chat without nearly killin each other and without waking up the entire Glade."
I turn away from Alby for the first time and smile sarcastically up at Newt. "Yes, Mama Newt."
Newt rolls his eyes. "Alby go do whatever your bloody job is. Apparently I need to have a chat with Charlie."
"Cause that's my name." I say to Alby. "Charlie."
Smiling, I turned away and walked off towards the Deadheads. Newt would follow me if he really wanted to talk to me.
Sure enough, he catches up about 5 minutes later. The minute he spots me, he bursts, "Were you out of your buggin' mind? I don't like to get on Alby's bad-side and I actually have a chance of coming out of a fight with him alive."
I shrug, "I would have been fine."
"That's your excuse? Come on, Charlie. I'm not a buggin' idiot. You and I both know you wouldn't have been 'fine.' So why'd you do it?"
I look up at him seriously. "I don't want him, or anyone else in this place thinking they can get away with picking on me. I'm the only girl and I don't want them thinkin that cause I'm a girl I can't stand up for myself."
"You can't against half these guys!" Newt raged. "You're 5'4, got virtually no muscle, and are 15- at MOST. You wouldn't stand a chance."
"This is exactly why I did it Newt! I'm with a bunch of bloody boy who think themselves so high and mighty cause they survived in buggin pre-prepared Glade, and can only see a girl as a poor helpless little creature who can't stand up for themselves and thus they must be able to push around. And if they don't listen, oh that's okay cause we can crush them like a bug. Well that's not true. I'm gonna have to prove sooner or later that I can pick myself up and move on as well as any bloody, no-good, stuck-up, no brained, half-witted boy in this godforsaken place!"
"That's not the way to do it, Charlie." Newt lowers his voice.
"I DON'T KNOW HOW ELSE TO DO IT, NEWT!" I yell, throwing my hands up in the air in frustration, "I woke up in a box yesterday with a boy with a bloody British accent bending over me, and find myself caged with a bunch of teenaged boys. How else can I do it?"
"Don't freak out like this for starters." he said. "You wanna prove that you can pick yourself up and move on? Then do it, Charlie. But don't go around picking fights with shanks twice your size for no good reason whatsoever. Cause the moment you start doing that then you're the bloody, no-good, stuck-up, no-brained half-wit."
At that, I begin to cry. I couldn't help myself, really. I buried my face in my lap and sobbed.
Newt sits down next to me. "I'm so scared, Newt. I don't know what to do. I'm so scared."
"We all are." he says gently. "We all are."
