Rachel's POV

I feel horrible after letting Jasmine down. I really wanted to her to live a proper life, OUTSIDE of an orphanage and NOT on the streets. As I lay in my hospital bed, I hear the shuffling of footsteps around me and a man in a white coat with a stethoscope around his neck comes into my view.

"Ms. Platten?"

"Hi Dr. Butera."

"Ms. Platten, I have some more news on your medical condition. It appears your pneumonia has progressed to a dangerous stage and a surgical operation is required. You will be under full anesthesia and the surgery should last a maximum of six hours if it is successful. Now let me explain the procedure. There is fluid around your left lung that could potential cause it to collapse. We'll enter there to drain most of the fluid to relieve the pressure. Although, the right side is not as serious as the left, we will also operate there as well again to remove any fluid buildup. Ms. Platten, in order for us to proceed, you and a family member must sign this form." Doctor Butera states. I look at Melanie. We both nod and sign the consent form.

"Good. Ms. Platten, we will begin the surgery at 8:15 tomorrow morning. Therefore, we will begin preparations at about 7:30." He says before exiting the room. Melanie gives me a tight hug.

"You'll be fine, sis. Just sing your Fight Song." She jokes. I chuckle.

"Thanks Mel. Better get some sleep now. It's gonna be a long day tomorrow."

Jasmine's POV

The mean lady, whose name I learned is Barbara, forced me into her small car and drove off to the orphanage. The orphanage looked like a war zone; for example, it reeked of alcohol.

Barbara grabbed by the ear and dragged me inside screaming

Barbara grabbed by the ear and dragged me inside screaming. Then she turned to look at me with an angry face.

"Now that you're with me, you follow my rules! Got that?" She barked. I nodded.

"Good, first, curfew is at 7:30. If I see your light on after that time, you will be punished. Second, hand over all your electronics, NOW!!" She yelled. I whimpered and immediately handed over my precious I-Pod and charger.

"Excellent, you WILL do as my son or I say." Just then a buff man came down the stairs on the left. Barbara smiled evilly.

"She's all yours Cody." Barbara said as she left to the kitchen. I shook with fear. He walked over slowly and grabbed me by the upper arm and led me down to the basement. At the bottom of the steps, I notice another girl about my age sitting on the cold, hard floor with her head down. Cody pointed at the ground next to the girl and I walked over and sat down. He then walked back up the stairs and out.

"What's your name?" I ask.

"I'm Nora and I'm thirteen." She said. Nora looked up at me.

"I'm Jasmine and I'm also thirteen

"I'm Jasmine and I'm also thirteen." I said. I could feel a bond developing between us. Before I could question further, Cody returned with two glasses of water and a loaf of bread. In the dim light, it was clear his face was full of pity and then, he spoke.

"Girls, you may know me as Cody. This place was my mother's idea and I'm trying to shut it down. You two are the first to come. So far, she thinks I'm on her side. I need you to play along with me to fool her. Barbara thinks I'm abusing you right now but I could never do that to such innocent children. Behind you, there is a box. In that box there is some makeup that I bought. Now, I'm no makeup expert, so you're gonna have to help me here. There is purple, green and black powder. I need you to make it look like you have bruises all over you. You up for it?" Nora and I giggled and nodded. It took us a good half an hour to apply the makeup.

"Alright, nice job girls. Now, pretend to cry and look hurt cause we're gonna head up to see my beastly mother." We nod. The three head up the stairs but as soon as we reach the top, Cody puts his hand on my ear and on Nora's. We enter the main floor and cut through the living room, where Barbara is sitting, to the stairs. She flashes Cody an evil grin which he returns. Once we're up stairs he showed us our room which aren't much better. The room was plain with one bunk bed in the corner.

"Get some sleep guys. We'll work out a plan to escape tomorrow." Cody whispers before leaving. We nod and hop in our beds.
