Jada sighed as she tried her hardest not to allow her boyfriend to get to her.
"I don't understand the big deal," she announced as she continued to chop up the vegetables for the salad she was making.
"You don't understand the big deal," Scott said shaking his head as if he couldn't believe what Jada was saying.
"I don't."
"Your best friend is coming to town who everyone knowns has a crush on you and you don't see the big deal?"
"He does not have a crush on me OK? Let the shit go."
"How long is he going to be here anyway?"
Jada looked at Scott like he had lost his mind.
"Last time I checked this was my apartment and he is more than welcome to stay for as long as he wants."
"I really don't think this is a great idea. I mean is it not bad enough that you will be spending the next month with him leading up to the draft. Why the hell is he even coming here?"
"For the last time, he is just by best friend and he will not be the only one coming. His family will also be in attendance to see me walk across the stage. Graduating college is a huge accomplishment you know."
"I don't want anything to happen between you guys. I mean you do have a connection that we don't have."
"So that's our fault?"
Jada waited for Scott to give her an answer and when he didn't, she went to go check on the steaks that she had in the oven. Her best friend Ben Simmons was coming to stay with her now that his freshmen year was over and he was preparing for the draft. She was beyond proud of him and couldn't wait to see what the future held for him. Her doorbell sounded off and she looked at Scott.
"Nothing is happening between us now play nice."
He rolled his eyes in response as Jada all but ran to the door to let Ben in.
"Benji," she exclaimed as he picked her up and kissed her forehead.
"J-Lo, I missed you how you been," he asked as he placed her back on her feet.
"I've been pretty good. Ready to graduate and root for you," she beamed as Ben licked his lips before smiling back at her.
"I'm proud of you," he said looking into her eyes.
"Thank you Benji. I'm proud of you too. You've been dreaming about this since we were kids."
Jada had known Ben and the Simmons family since she was eight years old. Due to her father's career as an Traveling Doctor, she moved around a lot. Being born in London, she lived there for the first five years of her life before moving to Paris for a year after that she found herself moving again to Barcelona before they settled in Melbourne for the next seven years. Her father would later accept a job that would bring them to the States, where they would eventually call Los Angeles their permanent home.
"It's still kind of surreal ya know? I don't think I would have made it this far without your support."
Scott clearing his throat seemed to bring them back to the moment and Jada found herself blushing.
"I hate to ruin the moment but how long are you here for?"
"Just for the weekend," Ben replied.
"Are you sure that you can't stay in a hotel or something? I don't feel comfortable with you staying here with my girlfriend."
Ben could hear the undertone in Scott's voice and chuckled while shaking his head.
"Scott stop it," Jada said sounding annoyed with the whole situation.
"It's OK J-Lo."
"No it's not. You two have been at odds for a while now and I want you to get along for me. Please," she asked grabbing Scott's hand. Scott smirked at Ben and Ben felt his jaw clinch. He had to remind himself that Jada wasn't his, no matter how much he wanted her to be.
"OK J-Lo."
"Don't call her that," Ben said with a tone that made Jada clench her thighs tightly together.
"Why not Benji," he asked titling his head slightly to the side.
Ben took two steps forward and Jada put a hand on his chest. He would be damned if he let some other man call Jada by the nickname that he'd given her many years ago.
"Benji stop it."
Ben took a long look at Scott before backing down. He couldn't put his hands on Scott because he was a part of the girl that he loved.
"I think it's time to go Scott."
"You're kicking me out," Scott asked pointing at himself.
"Yes I am. I would like to catch up with my best friend in peace."
Scott grabbed his jacket and walked out of the house.
"I'll be back later. I want him gone."
Ben shook his head and looked at Jada.
"Why are you still with him J-Lo? You can do so much better than him."
"Don't start Benji," she said pulling the steaks out of the oven. "I made your favorite," she announced.
Ben smiled and walked around the counter so he could take down two plates for her. He chose to ignore the fact that she refused to acknowledge his statement.
"So what do you plan on doing with your degree?"
"I really want to work in a hospital and maybe get my own practice up and running one day," she said taking a bite of her steak.
Jada was set to receive her degree in Physical Therapy and she couldn't wait to apply it to all that she had learned throughout her four years at USC.
"Enough about me how are you feeling Mr. Number One draft pick."
"The draft is still a month and a half away."
"Are you kidding me? He else would go number one? You're a shoe in."
"I'm just happy that you'll be there to support me."
"When have I ever missed anything that was a significant milestone in your life?"
"You never have and I truly thank you for that."
"No problem Benji. I always have your back you know that."
Jada's phone started to ring and she silenced it before turning her attention back to Ben.
"Let me guess its Scott."
"I can't apologize enough for how he treats you, but that's just Scott."
"I don't give a damn how he talks or treats me, but what I do give a damn about is how he treats you. What's his problem anyway?"
"He thinks you have a thing for me and I always tell him that he's paranoid."
Ben stopped cutting his steak and chuckled nervously.
"I told him that he had to be smoking something because you are nothing but my best friend."
"Yup best friend."
Jada smiled and jumped into his lap, giggling as he wrapped his arms around her waist.
"I missed you so much," she said placing her arms around his neck and laying her head on his chest.
For anyone who didn't know the two, you would honestly think they were a couple and right now in this moment that's exactly what it felt like to both Ben and Jada.
"I missed you too J-Lo. You have no idea," he whispered into her hair and pulling her body closer to his determined to savor this moment for as long as he could. He didn't know when he'd be able to hold her like this again.
So I caught the Ben Simmons bug and had to write it out lol! What are you guys thinking so far? Should I continue or not? Let me know guys!!
