Chapter 5

I woke up in a tight and warm cocoon. Rays of sun kissed my skin, warming it. However, it wasn't the rays that were keeping me trapped. Confused, I tried to move an arm but something was preventing me from do it. I opened my eyes and saw a bulky arm tightly wrapped around my waist.

"What the hell..." I mumbled while looking behind him. That was when I saw Kane sleeping in my bed, completly molded to my body.

I elbowed him, not to harshly because he was still wounded, but hard enough to wake him. He growled something and buried his nose on my neck, nuzzling.

"Kane, wake up!" I hissed, struggling in his embrace. He snarled again, nipping at my skin with his teeth. I squealed when he did it again.

"Sleep..." he mumbled.

Huffing, I pinched his arm, hard.

"Damn it, Maya, be still!" He growled, trying to keep me in his arms. After a few more minutes of struggling I made it out of the bed.

"Why the hell are you in here?"

"Don't know, angel, maybe because I wanted to." He murmured, burying his head on my pillow. I noticed that he sniffed my pillow before nuzzling it.

"You're a strange dog, did you know?" I scoffed at him and laughed when he growled at me, his snarl muffled by the pillow.

"Get up. I need to see your wound and then we have to start moving. I want to reach Panguitch this afternoon." I told him, looking out of the window. It was early but I was not tired at all, we had slept through the rest of yesterday's afternoon and the entire night so I was completely rested.

"What's the rush?"

"You do know that we do not have nothing to eat today, don't you?" I said, looking at him from the corner of my eye.

"I'll find something for you to eat, don't worry about it, my angel." He assured me, letting his head fall onto the pillow again.

I clenched my fists in frustration, he still had that attitude of neglecting himself and it was pissing me off! He never cared about him, always worried about me. Who knew that the man that was willing to leave me in Arizona was now so focused in protect me? I couldn't understand what was he thinking, I seriously couldn't.

As I exited the room, I saw Kane raise his head, with a curious look of his face. He had heard the increase of my heartbeat and didn't knew the cause. I didn't answer but slamming the door on my way out gave me some satisfaction. Then I remembered that I hadn't check his wound. I face palmed myself. However, I didn't stop, I went down the stairs and prepared myself to leave the house. The backpack was upstairs but I knew Kane wouldn't left it there. I tied my dirty and worn brown boots, smoothed my black shorts and pink t-shirt and pulled my long wavy chocolate hair in a ponytail and opened the door. I closed it and started walking. Seconds later, I heard Kane running after me, shouting my name in a pissed of tone that I only heard a couple of times. He was really pissed.

"Where the fuck do you think you're going, Maya?" He snarled, enraged.

"To Panguitch, as I told you minutes ago." I said, calmly. I had learned that, when a wolf is acting aggressively, we should always remain calm so that our panic or fear didn't set him off.

"I don't know why you're mad at me but that is no reason to just take off like that!" He snapped at me "Why are you mad?"

"Because you never care about you!" I shouted in his face, my voice trembling. "And even now you're priority was if I ate or not?! Are you mad? You're the one with your gut open!"

Kane stopped inches away from me, his eyes clouded with some kind of emotion that I didn't quite understand. He raised his hand to touch my cheek and only then I understood that he was cleaning a few tears that had escaped. I sniffed and looked at him. He was dashing as always, with his messy hair, now a little longer, falling to his eyes, vibrant jade eyes, thin lips and a shade of stubble in his jaw. He was wearing a white shirt, that looked small on him because of his large chest and wide shoulders, some worn jeans and big black boots. And he was carring my backpack.

He pulled some hairs, that had got loose from my ponytail, away from my face before cradling it in his large and calloused hand.

"You're all I care about." He whispered at the same time he leaned towards me.

The first touch of his lips was feather like, shy and gentle. His soft lips moved against mine, making my heart go crazy. One of his hands released my face to grab my waist, pulling me to him, as the other grabbed my neck. His lips started to press more firmly against mine, making the kiss more urgent, desperate even. I tried to respond to the urgency of his kiss. His tongue touched my lips, demanding entrance. When I didn't granted, right away, his snarl shook my body, earning a moan from me. He nipped my lip and I gasped. Out of air, I pulled him away from me, but he didn't budge, his lips glued to mine.

Kane finally released me, pressing our foreheads and noses against each other. His breath was ragged but his smile was wide, his eyes sparkling.

Me, on other hand, wasn't so sure about it. I cared about him, more than anything, and I realised that my feelings for him were stronger than I thought, but, if he was already protective about me, how would he be if we were together? I had to study werewolves, I knew how protective and possessive they could be. He would get hurt. On the other hand, our relationship should be purely platonic. We had a deal, when did it became something else? What if we got so mad at each other that we got separated, would I be alone again? What if one of us got killed while protecting the other? 'What if's were polluting my mind, darkening my mood.

"What's wrong?" Kane asked, his smile vanishing and worry replacing it. "Don't you like me?"

"It's not that...It's...I don't know..."

"Yes you do, don't lie to me." He warned, his eyes darkening.

"We should get going" I said, trying to avoid that conversation.

But the pain in his eyes broke my heart. Coldness replaced the warmness and happiness in his eyes. He let go of me and started walking, without glancing once in my direction. He was hurt. Because of me. A pit in my stomach started to eat my insides. I never wanted to hurt him, that was exactly why I hadn't said that I liked him too.

"I'm sorry..." I whispered, following behind him.
