Chapter 11
The days that followed were rough.
The day Alana passed, we had to drag a screaming Samantha to a safe place, where we set camp, and buried Alana. I knew that the boys, when they were burying her, they had shot her in the head, just in case of she was revived by the curse. Kane had gone with them but I didn't had to ask to know, his eyes told me everything. After that, Samantha shifted to her wolf and hadn't shifted back yet. Charlotte cried silently every night and, all of those nights without exception, I had crawled to her side and cried with her. Despite being unfair, I had pushed Kane away. Not on purpose but I needed the time alone, the time to think and mourn. I wasn't her friend, she didn't even like me, therefore, I didn't cry for my loss but for theirs, for the ones that knew her better than I. We didn't travel for 2 days, giving us the time we needed to recover from her death. It wasn't much but we couldn't stay in the same place without being at danger. That was why, on the third day, we dragged ourselves to the road again.
The silence in the car was deafening. There were only 4 people in car. Samantha refused to shift back so, despite being hesitant, I begged Kane to ran with her, to keep her company. He refused, he said he had to be with me that I needed him and was when I understood how cold he could be towards others. And, in that fragile state, nothing hurt me more. I loved him, with all my heart, but he couldn't turned his back to every one. They were our friends now, they needed us as we needed them. So, after a pull him aside to talk to him we had a huge fight. In the end, I was crying and he was so mad that his hands was shaking, however, he said he loved me even if I thought that he was a cold man, kissed me and shifted to his wolf. He had never made me more proud.
For the other three days, we decided to reduce the hours of driving. It was hard for us to be locked in a car for hours without a break, therefore, we only drove 5 hours a day.On the fourth day, Samantha shifted to her human form. Still broken but ready to start fighting. She was a wolf, afterall, and wolves were tough and proud. Shockingly, Samantha gave me a little smile and I smiled back. Only later I found out that Kane had actually talked to her.
After that, I gained strength, knowing that if Samantha could do it, so did I. I didn't cry again, I held my head high and made sure that Charlotte didn't drown in sorrow. I stopped pushing Kane away, apologizing for my behaviour, I helped at the camps as much as I could and did my very best to help Samantha. She was suspicious as first, but she ended up accepting me.
It was on the first day of September that we first saw it.
"What the hell is that?" Ace asked, trying to cover his eyes from the sun to see better.
"No fucking idea..." Ryan said, doing the same as Ace.
"It looks like a wall."
"That's one hell of a wall then."
"Oh shut up, Ace, it looks like it." Charlotte huffed, hiting Ace in the shoulder.
" A wall, huh?" I meditated.
"What do you think it is, Maya?"
I looked at Samantha and then at the alleged 'wall' again. We were pass Shelby, close to the boarder between the States and Canada so that could only be one thing. One and a half months had passed and, knowing that every military force was there, that wall could very well been built in the short time.
"I think is a barrier against the plague." I answered, looking at it. "I knew, since the beggining, that Canada would never allow this to infect their people, so it would surprise me if it was exactly it, a barrier."
"Do you think they'll let us pass?" Ryan asked.
"Maybe, if they don't see us as a threat."
"And what about us? We're wolves, will they let us pass too?" Samantha asked.
"They have to." Ace answered, looking at her. " Wolves were captured illegally and were given as almost extinct, however, they're still citizens and they can't deny assistance."
"He's right, no soldier whould leave someone behind." Ryan said, agreeing with Ace.
We stood looking at the wall for a few more minutes, amazed with its magnitude. It was huge from this distance. It looked like miles and miles of barbed wire separated the States from Canada, with big gates every five or six miles. The gates were at least a hundred and fifty feet tall, completely colossal. If we looked closely, through the barbwire, we could see the tiny military jeeps patrolling.
"It's almost over, the nightmare is almost at the end." Charlotte whispered, bewildered.
"We'll be free." Was all that Kane said, looking with me with intense eyes, full of promises of an amazing future.
Grinning for the first time in God knew how many days, we hurried to our knew truck, and, with me at the wheel, we sped off to the massive wall.
The air in the car was full with energy, a renewed hope and joy. I stepped on the gas pedal and felt the truck responding to my demands, speeding through the road. We were all talking excitedly, wondering about what would await us. Would they let us pass? What was waiting on the other side? Was anymore survivors? We hadn't answers, but our imagination was wild, full of hope and dreams of a new life. Kane and Samantha were worried about what would happen to them but I refused to think that something bad would happen. They were, as Ryan told us, american citizens, with the same rights as any human, they couldn't deny help.
Fifteen minutes later, we were standing at 300 feet from the wall. We all had to cran our necks to look at the top of it, were the sun seemed to touch it when we were standing so close.
"Now what? Do we have to ring a bell?" Ace asked, crossing his arms and looking curiously at the gates.
"That was just stupid." Charlotte answered, rolling her eyes.
"C'mon, you can't say that it wasn't funny." He laughed.
"She can't but I can. It was stupid." Kane mocked, while rested his chin in my head and had his arms wrapped around me.
"You're mean."
We were laughing at Ace's pouting face when four military hummers surrounded us, soldiers jumping out of the vehicle and pointing machine-guns at us. Kane and Samantha growled, but raised their arms like the rest of us. One of them approached.
"Identify yourselves." He ordered.
Ryan stepped forward, his hands in the air showing that we meant no harm. "We escaped the plague and have been travelling for over a two months. No one was bitten, we didn't find anyone else in there."
"Wait, where do you come from?"
"Me, Samantha, Ace and Charlotte" he said, pointing at them "have been together since Nevada and we found Kane and Maya" he pointed at us " in Utah."
Completetly bewildered, the soldier looked at us with wide eyes. "You crossed the entire county? By yourselves?"
It was Charlotte who answered. "Yap and having two wolves with us helped, a lot."
"Wolves?" Another soldier asked.
"Is there any problem with that?" I interrupted, grabbing Kane's hand tightly. He would not put up a problem, he couldn't. I wouldn't leave Kane out here alone, no matter what. I couldn’t even think what I, or any one of us, would do if they didn’t let Kane and Samantha pass. I refused to let that scenery occupy my mind.
"No ma'am, no problem at all. C'mon, lets take you inside." The first soldier said as he talked to his radio and all of us took a deep relieved breath. We were safe. The nightmare was, finally, over.
Seconds passed until we heard creak of the huge gates opening. With smiles so big that our cheeks hurt, we all joined hands and started walking to the gate. Inside would be our future. We would never forget all those torturous but at the same time happy weeks, we had survived, we had met each other and, despite all the pain, we had gotten stronger.
We had survived and that was all that mattered.
