          Makoto's POV

It was a restless night for me. No matter what I did I couldn't fall asleep. I tried taking some sleep medicine, listening to peaceful music, drinking a glass of warm milk; nothing worked.

I was pacing back and forth in my room to see if some exercise would help at all. I stopped and looked out my window. The night was shining in the moonlight; I could see every bush, every crack in the road, it was like the moon was replacing the sun. As if the moon didn't like the dark as much as I did so it decided to take on the Sun's job.

I couldn't take it anymore. I had to go outside, go run beside the ocean maybe. Even though it scared me, watching the ocean always gave me this calm feeling. Not when I was swimming in it of course, but when I was just watching it. Watching the waves flood the sand then recede, each wave taking a new shape, not one second of it the same as the next. I really wanted to go, but my family was out of town at the moment so if something happened to me... no. I had to get out of here. This is a friendly neighborhood; the chances of something bad happening are very very slim.

I grabbed the keys off my dresser and left the house. I stopped outside before I shut the door. I thought for a moment then went back inside. I opened the kitchen drawer and took out our sharpest knife. Just in case... the thought of me maybe needing to use it made me shudder. If the chance came for me to use it, would I even be able to? Well, just the thought of having it made me feel better, so I put it in my belt loop, made sure it wouldn't cut me or my pants, and left.

The night was cooler than I thought it'd be, especially by the shore, but the humid night breeze felt good for once. The waves were gentle and calm. It felt like I was the only person in the world in this quiet, shining, breezy night.

*Rustle*

What was that? I turned sharply to my left and saw a few bushes a few meters away. They shook ever so slightly but not because of the wind. The breeze had left. Even the wind left when it got scared.

*Rustle*

I reached towards my knife. I had a hard time getting my hand around the handle because of how much I was trembling and cut myself a little. I finally released it from my belt loop and held it out from my body aiming at the bush, shaking. 'Maybe it's just a bird... or a little rabbit.' I tried to reassure myself.

As I was inching closer something caught my eye. At the very bottom of the bush I could've sworn I saw... a foot? No I couldn't have. I mean if it was a foot it was too small to be some sort of bad guy. Right? And why would he be barefoot if it was? The bush rustled ever so slightly again. I reached out to push away the twigs and leaves to see what I was dealing with. My hand was trembling more than ever and if I wasn't careful my knife could hurt something or someone innocent. I was about to look through the bush when I felt back with a great force.

I didn't see what got me at first. I just saw a blur of what looked like a human figure and fell backwards suffocating. I was struggling too much to get the hands off my neck to see my intruder. I didn't know where my knife went, but I had to find it soon. This person was awfully strong. I've been swimming my whole life. I developed a lot of strength but for some reason, I had trouble getting these small hands off my neck. Maybe it was the panic that prevented me. A thought popped into my head and I took the person's wrists and dug my nails into them as hard as possible. I felt a warm oozing liquid come out and the attacker let out a loud scream. They got off me and I quickly grabbed their hands and held them down in the sand. That's when I first saw her face.

She looked up at me with terror and tears in her eyes. She had cuts, bruises, and red marks all over her body; and she was... naked. I should've felt embarrassed but I didn't. She was so beautiful. She looked so hurt and traumatized. All I wanted to do was help her. She wasn't attacking me just to hurt me, she attacked me because she was scared. Probably even more scared than I was. Her (eye color) eyes stared at me like the stars and her (hair length), (hair color) hair looked so soft. 'Who did this to you?' I thought. She seemed to be around my age, maybe a year or so younger.

I felt her wrists trembling, and she started to sob. I didn't want her to be afraid of me. "Hey," I whispered softly. "I'm not going to hurt you. I want to help you. Please." I softened my gaze and stared sadly in her eyes. Her trembling eased, and she cried harder. We stayed like that for a bit, and I slowly started to loosen my grips on her wrists. She suddenly jerked her arms out of my grasp and grabbed on to my shirt as tight as she could and cried into it. I sat up and gently hugged her. The way she held onto me was so innocent, so heartwarming. She was like a child scared of a storm. "It'll be okay. You're safe with me. I promise," I gently reassured her. I pulled her hand away from my shirt and took it off. I carefully put it over her head, lifted her up bridal style, and carried her back home.
