The parking lot was almost empty, only two or three student cars left. Perfect. Less likely for anyone to see us. I pulled up my pants and joined Justin as we walked through the school courtyard to the front door. He kindly opened the door and I rolled my eyes at him. The halls were silent aside from the vacuum from the janitor on the third floor. We took the stares at a fast pace, almost like we were racing.
“Where is she meeting you at?” I asked, running up the second flight of steps.
“The library.”
We took the last step of the second flight and rounded the corner to the library. Inside I could see Stephanie, one of my friends, and her mom who works in the library talking to someone I didn’t recognize whom I’d guessed was Justin’s mom. Again he opened the door for me.
“Hey mom,” He said, talking to the lady who had been in a conversation with Mrs.Rumer.
“Hey, you’re a few minutes early,” she said, smiling at him as he hugged her.
“Aiden didn’t want you to think she kidnapped me,” he laughed, rolling his eyes.
Stephanie came around the counter and hugged me, “where in this world have you been?”
“I’ve been here, always have been,” I answered hugging her back.
“Aiden, I want you to meet my mom,” Justin said, scratching the back of his head.
I put my hand out for her to shake, “Hi, I’m Aiden.”
“Nice to meet you, I’m Pattie,” she grinned and took my hand.
I smiled back at her as she turned to look at Justin, “You were right, she is very beautiful.”
“Mom!” Justin blushed a bright pink.
“So Steph, are you going to the game tonight?” I asked.
“I want to but my mom has to work at her other job tonight,” she said sadly.
“I’ll take you.”
She hugged me tightly, almost lifting me off the ground, “You’re amazing, I love you.”
“Yeah, but you’re suffocating me,” I choked.
She dropped me and I took a deep breath as Mrs.Rumer laughed at the two of us.
I returned my attention to Justin who was being handed a white pair of skinny jeans by his mother.
“I brought them here because I wasn’t sure if we would be able to get back in time. I witnessed the traffic this morning and it was bad,” Pattie was saying to him just as he turned to me.
“I’m gonna go change,” he said taking a deep breath.
“There’s a restroom down this hallway to the right,” Mrs.Rumer said to him.
I watched him leave the library and waited until the door closed behind him before I turned to face the three others in the room.
“Thank you for letting him borrow your school shirt, that was very nice of you,” Justin’s mom smiled at me.
“Oh, no problem,” I said, shaking my head, “I thought that if he was going to represent the school tonight then he might as well wear a spirit shirt.”
“Who is he going to the dance with again?” Stephanie asked.
“I have no clue, I didn’t ask,” I answered as I walked to Mrs.Rumer’s desk, taking a post-it, and began drawing a number on it.
