The lights lit up the field as loud music played and the cheerleaders danced on the sidelines. The bleachers were full on both sides, home and visitor. I watched quietly as the football team ran drills. It was six forty-five, fifteen minutes until game time. I saw Gator’s tall, lanky figure standing, his weight shifted to his left and he stared at almost the entire Central student body until he saw me and waved. I smiled and waved back, signing to him that I was going to be with Justin at the food stand after he sang. He smiled and signed back, “You like him.” I flipped him off and he blew me a sarcastic kiss before returning to do drills with the team. Stephanie looked down, blushing. She liked Gator, but Gator didn’t know her. Well, he knew her in the sense that he knew that she was one of my friends but they didn’t talk.
Kountry Gentlemen by Family Force 5 was playing from the loud speakers of the stadium. Jennifer was singing it loudly next to me. I laughed at her funny attempts at dancing. I heard a whole football field of girls squeal and knew exactly why. I turned from Jennifer to the center of the field to see Justin, talking to a man that I didn’t know who was handing him a microphone. He messed with something in his ear, which I’d have to guess was an earpiece. The music slowly quieted and Justin waved to the Keller side of the stadium, girls squealed. Then the Central side, again girls squealed. He held the microphone up to his mouth before saying, “’sups guys?” I laughed at his awkwardness.
“I’m here to support Central High School, if you don’t know, but I learned the American National Anthem just so that I could represent by singing it here tonight,” He said, people booing on the Keller side when he mentioned Central, “after that, I’ll be working the food stand and some of the money will go to charity.”
There was a little bit of a pause before he continued, “so, might as well get this started. Don’t get mad if I mess up,” he laughed, “I’m Canadian.”
We all stood as he took a deep breath before starting the foreign, to him, anthem. He did a pretty decent job, though he seemed a little nervous the whole time. I zoned out in the middle of it while I stared at him, looking almost the size of a lawn gnome from where I was sitting in the stands.
The football teams from both school started chanting right as soon as the anthem was over. Their schools mimicking them until we heard the whistle blow and Justin walked off the field, giving a “man hug” to Gator as he made his exit. Stephanie, Jennifer, and I all stood and followed Justin. There was already and extremely long line of mostly girls waiting at the window of the food court. Justin caught my eye and he ran up to us, followed by his body guard, who quickly ushered us inside as a mob of girl ran for us.
It was actually quite crowded in the small food stand. It was only about the size of the average bedroom, if not maybe a little bigger. With me, Justin, Jennifer, Stephanie, and Kenny in the small area, you can guess that it was kind of crowded. Stephanie planted her butt on a stack of crates and Jennifer leaned against the wall next to her. I watched as Kenny approached the serving window and stated that Justin was not giving out autographs or taking pictures at the time. I held back a chuckle when I heard the whole line pout in sighs and huffs of “aw, man”.
I sat tiredly on a stack of unopened soda boxes, leaning my head against the wall while Justin stood at the window, taking orders. I heard soft whispers from all the girls, over all the bubbly giggles that made my skin crawl and my stomach turn inside out. They asked each other if they thought any of us three girls was his homecoming date. It was amusing, yet sickening at the same time that they were so interested.
I was starting to doze off when I heard my name being said and I my eyes opened slowly as I turned my head to acknowledge the person who had said it. At the window I saw Kate, one of the most beautiful girls I knew. Her soft blond locks fell onto her shoulders and her bright blue eyes shined as she smiled big and waved at me. I stood and came to her, Justin patting my back as he walked away to get himself a drink of water.
