The blackness was suddenly filled with the echoing sound of rhythmic beeping. Then, the black turned into more of a grey, then a blinding fluorescent light as I squinted. Though, the beeping hadn’t quieted, but was actually even louder. As though it were right next to me. I went to take a breath, but I felt a sharp pain in my ribs as I inhaled.
My senses began to slowly return and the smell of disinfectant and medication filled my nostrils. I opened my eyes all the way, immediately noticing the dry-erase board with names of nurses on it. Nobody was with me. Looking to my right, I saw the IV drip and heart monitor. Then I looked down at my arms, wrapped in bandages with only the IV needle sticking out. My leg had a cast on it. That’s when the flashbacks of flames….and Robert….flooded my mind.
I suddenly remembered it all so clearly. All of it except for the part where I got out alive. I could only remember someone yelling for me. Someone I knew, but I wasn’t sure who it might have been. Then I’d obviously fallen unconscious. Now I’m here. Alone.
Then, my sister came in the door, holding a cappuccino in her hand. She froze and dropped it when she made eye contact with me. Before I could open my mouth, she had her arms around my neck as she sobbed. A bit confused, I pat her on the back awkwardly.
“Aiden, I’m so glad you’re okay,” she choked.
I didn’t say anything.
“We almost lost you,” she said and it peaked my interest.
“What do you mean?” I asked. I knew that I had obviously gotten burned and was beat up pretty bad.
“Your heart stopped beating on the way here. You lost so much blood. They had to take blood from me and Gator for you,” She explained, nudging towards the bandage on her arm, “the resuscitated you and you’ve been asleep for almost two days now. They didn’t know if you were going to make it.”
The idea of death crossed my mind and I shuddered. I was dead for at least a second, or even a minute.
“How did I get out?” I asked.
“You don’t remember?” She said, looking confused.
“No, I don’t…”I admitted.
“Justin…”
I looked up at her, my brow furrowed in confusion.
“Yeah. Mom said he pulled up just when she had gotten out. She said he ran inside to find you. The house was almost completely gone by the time he actually got you out of there.”
“But how did he even know I was there?” I asked.
“Gator,” She said and I didn’t reply, trying to take it all in.
“Did I just hear my name?” Gator’s voice bellowed form around the curtain as he pulled it back.
He also made eye contact with me when he entered. Though, unlike my sister, he didn’t try to pummel me.
“You’re awake,” he smiled and then looked down at the spilled coffee on the ground.
He opened the curtain slightly and I heard him say something about a mess that needed cleaning before he came fully into the room and stood at my bedside.
“You saved my life you know,” I said to him.
“Nah. I hadn’t even gotten there until the second Justin carried you out of the house,” He admitted.
“Speaking of whom,” I started, “where is Justin?”
They both looked at each other sadly.
“His manager picked him up after they treated him yesterday and they left town. He didn’t say anything about where he was going,” Kylee said solemnly.
I nodded slowly, pursing my lips as I whispered under my breath, “guess he has better things to do than play superhero.”
