Sunlight crept it’s ugly face into my window and into my eyes, waking me. I groaned hoarsely and pulled the comforter over my head, whining. My head was pounding and my stomach was growling. Suddenly, I felt a strong urge to pee. Why? I’m tired. I don’t want to get out of my warm bed and walk to the cold bathroom. I scowled as I through the blanket off of me and walked out of my room. Mom was sitting on the couch, eating a bowl of cereal and Kylee was still asleep. The green lights on the oven flash “12:00 pm”. My bladder screamed at me and I rushed to the bathroom.
As I washed my hands I looked in the mirror at my mascara stained face and ratted hair, sighing. I skipped drying my hands and reached for the shower faucet. The warm water felt good on my tense muscles. I washed my face and hair quickly and shut the water off and stepped out. Leaving my clothes on the floor, I left the bathroom, wrapped in my towel.
My dog followed me into my room, jumping onto my bed and lying down, curled up in a ball. He watched me put my baggy grey sweatpants on and a loose grey sweatshirt with the collar cut off so it hung slightly off my shoulder, revealing the bright pink tank top I had on underneath. I saw my phone flashing at me and picked it up. “Unknown”, it flashed and I recalled the text I’d received from Justin from Unknown.
“Gator. I hope it’s okay.”
I slid the phone open and typed quickly, “it’s fine,” and threw it back down, reaching for my hair brush that was on top of the book case.
I brushed through my hair, pulling it up into a high side pony-tail. My stomach growled at me again. Food. What sounds good? Waffle House. My stomach growled loudly in agreement. I quickly dialed Jennifer’s number on my cell phone. It only rang twice.
“Hello?” her mom answered.
“Hey Tina, is Jen awake?”
“No, she’s not.”
“Wake her lazy ass up; I’m taking her to breakfast.”
She laughed and I heard he call Jennifer’s name and then the phone hitting something before Jennifer’s hoarse voice groaned through the receiver.
“Wake up, Jen. I’m coming to pick you up. I’m taking you out for food.”
She grunted as she sat up, sighing, “kay. I’m going as I am, I don’t give a fuck what you say.”
“Whatever, just be outside.”
I hung up as I slipped on my shoes, grabbing my keys and my wallet from my book-bag, and sliding my phone into my pocket.
“Mom, I’m taking Jen to get food don’t wait up, I don’t know when I’ll be home but I will be back to get ready,” I said and opened the garage doors.
The humid Texas weather stuck to me like a glove before I got in my car and started it. The same song that was playing when I turned the car off started where it left off. I hit the “Radio” button and turned it down while waiting at the stop light. My heart stopped and my stomach wrenched inside me as I heard Ryan Seacrest’s voice say “A picture was sent in by one of our listeners of our friend Justin Bieber in a car with an anonymous girl in the driver’s seat. Who do you think it is? Find out in a minute coming up next on The Sleaze.”
My eyes glances over at my glove box and I reached over, opening it and pulling out a pack of cigarettes. I know it’s wrong. I’m too young, it’s unhealthy, yadda-yadda-yadda. I rolled down the window and lit one, throwing the pack back into the glove box when I pulled up to Jennifer’s. She was sitting on the porch in her South Park pajama bottoms and a black T shirt. She stood up and tiredly walked to the passenger side.
