- Sitting -
"Um, Mr. Phantomhive?"
"Yes, Ronald?" I ask distractedly, flipping through papers.
"I broke it."
Looking up, I lean to the left to see my student staring at me with a stupid grin on his face.
"Broke what?"
"Your pencil, Mr. Phantomhive. I accidentally snapped it in half."
I close my eyes and rub my temples, taking a deep breath.
"And just what were you doing that led to that, Ronald?"
"I was seeing if it would snap in half, obviously."
Oh, yeah. Right.
Obviously.
Because who would have ever imagined that if you put both your hands on the ends of a pencil and applied force, that it would snap in half?
Not me, that's who.
Never in a million years.
"Just throw it away."
"But then I won't have anything to write with."
"Then use the end that's still sharp, or take the half with the eraser and sharpen it."
"But...it's broke."
Oh my fucking God.
"Ronald, I suggest you either find another pencil - and refrain from breaking it - or just lay your head down. We only have..." I look at the clock on the wall, "thirteen minutes of class left. Are you done with your assignment?"
"Uh, no."
"And why is that? You've had forty two minutes to do your work."
I feel agitation crawl under my skin when he starts to laugh.
"I broke my pencil."
"Forty two minutes ago?"
He nods.
"Yep. Snapped it right after you gave it to me. Sorry about that, I was really just curious if I had enough strength to do it, honestly. I've been workin' out a little bit lately, can ya tell?"
"No, you look the same. Find something to do - quietly - until class ends."
Pfft, really?
I was seeing if it would snap in half, he says. I was really just curious if I had enough strength to do it, honestly.
Who doesn't?
...
I pull a pencil out from my desk drawer and make sure no one's watching.
