Well last night was awful to say the least. Why is Luke such a dick? And why does he hate Ash so much?

Ashton didn’t come to school today. I think he’s mad at me. Probably because I didn’t tell him about Luke coming to work at my uncle’s restaurant. Ashton’s really protective of me. I don’t know he thinks Luke’s going to hurt me or something. Ashton being gone today really upset me. I was all alone all day with no one to talk to. It felt like I was back in America at my old school again being “that girl” that was always by herself. I tried to text him and ask if he was sick or something, but he didn’t respond. Why is he ignoring me?

I went to Ashton and I’s usual table at lunch without going through the line. I wasn’t hungry today. I just sat there and played with my nails. I felt uncomfortable, and I was getting anxiety. All the voices in the loud cafeteria were starting to get to me.

I started to hear some laughter and looked over and saw Luke and Calum goofing off. They had their trays in their hands. They’re going to spill their food if they’re not careful. They were heading in my general direction. Noticing this, I buried my face in my hands. God, I wish I could just be invisible.

I heard their laughing getting closer, and, soon enough, I was covered in gross cafeteria mac and cheese. I looked up and saw that Luke had tripped and dumped his whole tray of food on me by accident. It was all down the front of my uniform. I could see the shock in his face. I stood up, feeling the anger bubbling inside of me.

“What’s your problem?” I yelled at Luke.

“What do you mean ‘what’s my problem’? I tripped!” his shocked expression turned into an angry one.

“You need to watch where you’re going and stop screwing around! Life’s not just some game!”

“Wow this strangely sounds like the same argument we had last night!” he pointed out.

“Maybe that’s because you don’t take anything seriously!” I retaliated.

“Maybe you take everything too seriously!”

By now we’d drawn the attention of most of the people around us. Everyone was staring. I didn’t mean to make such a scene.

“You know what, “ Luke started, “you’re just jealous and self-centered. You think you have me all figured out when in reality you don’t know shit. So maybe you should stop being so quick to judge and fucking get over yourself.” he finished before stomping off into the hallway. Calum hesitated for a moment before turning and quickly following him. People kept looking at me, wondering what I would do next. I just stood there as I felt tears fall down my cheeks. I grabbed my stuff and headed to the bathroom to wash up.

-------------------------------------------------------------

After school I went straight home without Luke. Fuck him, he can get here himself. I went upstairs to my room and changed into some jeans and a t-shirt then threw my uniform in the washer. I went back to my room to put on some shoes when I saw my phone buzzing on my bed. I unlocked it and noticed it was a text from Ashton. It said:

sorry i didn’t come in today. i was a bit under the weather. see you tomorrow (:

That made me smile. I quickly typed him back to get better and that I missed him today. It lifted my mood slightly knowing that he wasn’t still mad.

By the time I got back downstairs, I saw that Luke had already arrived and was working in the back. We technically don’t have to interact at all. As long as he stays back there everything should be fine.

--------------------------------------------

“Closing time.” my uncle declared as he locked the front door of the shop, “Delia, can you and Luke handle clean up? I have to help Peter with his homework.”

“Why can’t Aunt Ellen help him?” He was not leaving me down here alone with Luke.

“She’s got work stuff to take care of. C’mon it won’t take you that long if you both work at it.” and he was gone.

I heavily sighed and made my way back to where Luke was. He remained silent as he washed the dishes and I stepped past him to grab the broom. We cleaned in silence for a few minutes before Luke spoke.

“Hey I’m sorry about earlier.” he let out softly without looking up from his work. I was a bit shocked, and I didn’t quite know what to say.

“It’s okay.” no it’s not okay. What’s wrong with me, “I guess it was my fault.” he looked up from what he was doing when I said this.

“No it wasn’t. Calum and I were messing around. You’re right I should take things more seriously.” I immediately felt guilty.

“Luke, I didn’t mean that-”

“It’s fine. Really, you’re right. And I shouldn’t be so mean to you. You can tell Ashton he doesn’t have to worry about me anymore.” he placed the last dish on the drying rack as he finished up, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” he half smiled at me as he exited the diner.

What was that?
