I slammed the door to my house and sat right in the middle of the floor. I started groaning, and I just continued to hit the floor with my fists.
“Um, honey, please don’t tell me that you’re drunk.” Mrs. Lasdon is standing over me. I look up and glared at her.
“I’M NOT DRUNK! I’M-” I bit my lip. I almost told her about Preston. Ugh.
“I OFFICIALLY BAN NAMES THAT START WITH PRESTON AND END WITH PARKER IN THIS GODFORSAKEN HOUSE OF OURS.” I hope that wasn’t too obvious.
“Who’s Preston?!” My neighbor started wiggling her eyebrows. I mumbled a curse word and started walking to the pantry to get some chips. My bowl of Lay’s Sea Salt Potato Chips was overflowing with salty goodness. I grabbed a cold cup of orange juice and inhaled the fruity combination.
“Ahhhhhhhh…..” I sank into the couch, the pillows enveloping me. I closed my eyes peacefully, but to only find Mrs. Lasdon looking at me suspiciously as I crack my eyes open.
“STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT.”
Her eyes narrowed. I slowly put a chip in my mouth and started chewing away.
“Chewing, chewing, chewing…” My mouth wandered. She raised an eyebrow.
“You’re acting really weird. Like, worse than usual.” I put on a disapproved face.
“That’s mean.”
“Are you high?” My eyes popped.
“WHAT?!” My head flew up so fast my hair flung away and showed my rainbow eye. I gasped, from the pain, and gritted my teeth, covering my eye. I pressed my fist against it. Stars, enough to fill up the night sky, filled my vision.
Ms. Lasdon was monotone as she glanced upon me with her blank stare. I frowned, started fidgeting, and she finally said, “You are so much like your mother.” And she smiled.
My eyes turned glassy, and I looked down at my hands. They were linked together in my lap. She plopped down next to me, sinking into the cushions, and shifting my weight towards her.
“I knew your mother during high school. I remember ditching math class, walking through the halls, to see her in a physical fight with the leading jock on the football team, who was a brutal football player. She gave him a black eye. Imagine that!" She laughed brightly. I giggled, my eyes becoming shiny once again. She smiled and grabbed my cheeks.
“It’s ok, hon. All these bumps in life make us stronger. We can’t let them drag us down, we can only let them lift us up. Let’s get dinner ready. I was thinking spaghetti or something Italian style. Let’s go to ShopRite or WholeFoods and get some ingredients. JAISON! WANT TO COME WITH US TO WHOLEFOODS?”
“Ah ah ah, we made a deal!” He said, coming downstairs wagging his finger. “You get the food, I only EAT it.” We all laughed.
“Let’s go.” I slipped on my Nike sneakers and a sweatshirt and we both giggled until we reached WholeFoods.
