The next few days were quiet and uneventful. After the incident in the sushi restaurant, Elle had distanced herself from both Chance and I. I tried once to get her to talk, but she shook my attempts off dismissively. I had known Elle all my life and one thing I knew all too well about her was that she took her time and space to think over whatever was bugging her, and then acted on it. I decided to leave her be.

*~*~*

On a late Tuesday night, Chance and I sat around our little table sipping tea and listening to music as the sun disappeared below the horizon. The school was quiet, as well as the streets outside, only a few stragglers heading home from work. My dorm room was dark, the only light filtering in through the doorway of my room and the window. I reluctantly reached for the schoolwork sitting on the table beside me, and Chance did the same. With our feet intwined below the table, we began ploughing our way through maths, science, and english assignments.

We had been working for over an hour. My head hurt and I had been staring at a math problem for ten minutes. I let out a frustrated sigh and ran my hands through my hair, rubbing my eyes with the heel of my palms. Chance reached out, taking my hand with his. He smoothed my hair down and stroked my hand with his thumb.

He pushed his chair out from the table, "Let's take a break," he smiled.

But right as I stood up, Elle came bursting through the door, looking confident and ready to talk.

"Chance, can I talk to you?" Elle said quietly.

Chance glanced at me, he looked helpless. I squeezed his hand and let him go, smiling encouragingly. Chance took a deep breath, and followed Elle out the door.
