I laughed aloud at the memory of Anna strutting out of the closet wearing the towel bib over the small swimsuit, while I sat on the bed. I covered my mouth from the outburst, hoping nobody woke up because it was so late. I should be asleep because I have chores in the morning, early morning. I sighed and slipped off to sleep.
The next morning I woke up late next to Anna, who was shaking me while my alarm blared.
"Dude! Lazy bum, I did your chores for you. And I have news!" she yelled, practically jumping up and down with excitement. "Melanie and Ashley said you could come on the honeymoon even though you're not in the wedding party! We leave in two days, so you need to pack. And you're paying me back for this by doing my chores until we leave. See ya." And before I knew it, I heard her boots stomping down the porch stairs leading to the barn. I guessed she was going to Bailey's to help at their sanctuary or go on a ride.
I jumped off the bed and pulled on my jeans and a plaid shirt. I slowly made my way down the stairs, the grogginess from my abrupt awakening just hitting me. Once I got into the kitchen, I looked at the clock. It was 9:13; I grabbed an apple and headed to the back door to look over the land. The crops weren't as ruined from the storm as ours though, just a little flooding in some areas.
Anna's dad, Jonah, snuck up behind me and scared me, causing me to throw the apple towards the pigs in surprise.
"Good morning to you too." I grumbled, I hate to be scared. He chuckled and said,
"Sorry, you were just there! Where were you this morning? I saw Annie doing your chores."
"Oh yeah, sorry. I was up late last night talking to my uncle over in California last night and I overslept by accident," I apologized, rubbing my hands together and leaned against the doorpost.
"It's okay, as long as all those chores get done, y'all can do whatever." he chuckled and clapped his hands together, startling me again. "Ah sorry. So did Annie tell you about Florida?"
"Yeah, she woke me up and told me everything, but I'm excited."
"Okay then, well I've got my hands full after y'all leave! Well, get back to work, son. You've got a break in the southwestern corner of the north pasture.
"Yes sir."
I rolled my shoulders back and sighed at the heat. Suddenly, a shovel dug into the discarded wood behind me and threw it into the bed of the ranch truck. I turned to find Anna leaning against the shovel, patting one of the field horses that she had apparently been riding.
"Well, people are just so quiet today, all sneakin' around and such. But good morning to you." I said, tapping Anna on the nose, leaving a streak of dirt on her
freckled face.
"Lunch? I'm starved. I worked all morning over at Bailey's. One of their mares had a colt! Still haven't decided on his name though! I went for Bear, since he actually looks kinda like a bear! He's got this deep bay coat with dark brown eyes and always carries this alert but wild look on his face." she rambled on. I laughed here and there as her eyes danced with adoration, trying to finish the fence as fast as I could. I added in an "aww" every few minutes too. She finished her long speech just as I finished the fence, a good 5 or 10 minutes later at least.
