The warm summer breeze that had hit our faces earlier today had turned colder and stronger. Anna gripped my arm and shivered as she smiled up at me. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder. I smiled down at her; I'm sure the love shone in my eyes. I looked down into her eyes searching for that love, but her eyes were misted. It was unfortunate, but I would wait so long for this girl, and she didn't even know it. I took off my old letterman jacket and slipped it onto her shoulders. I reached into my jean pockets and revealed the keys to the pink car and pulled her towards it.

"Where are we going?" she asked quietly. I turned as smiled as I opened the cotton candy colored door and ushered her inside.

"Is this your idea of a date?" she started. I averted her eyes and pulled myself inward, fearing her voice. "Because if it is," her voice softened, "I think it's cute." I faced her wide-mouthed and she smiled softly. She stuck her hand under my chin and closed my mouth.

"Drive then!" she motioned forward with her hands. "Come on!" I chuckled and started the car. I rested my arm on the back of the chair and she placed her hand back into mine. My fingertips played with her hair as I turned the car to the north, headed for a secluded cove I found on the map in my room.

"If this is just a pity date because you're still 'in debt' to me, I'm turning around." Her head flipped toward me, and she whispered a "No," which wasn't a lie. My stomach jumped with joy and I smiled at her, though I felt like shouting with happiness.

"But," she started with that dreaded wor; "I still don't know how I feel about all this."

 "This?" I asked.

"This. You, Charlie, getting hurt again. I don't know if I could handle it. That really hurt and not just emotionally." Her eyes closed as she mumbled the last sentence. My foot hit the breaks and we screeched to a stop. "And before you say anything, yes, he did hit me. Once," she said sullenly, referring to Will.

I sat there, my mind in a blur. I hit the wheel and swung pink door open; it slammed as I circled the car. Anna got out and began to follow me, trying to calm me down.

"Really, it was bad then, but this isn't then. This is now and you're here. You said that," she whispered from behind me, but I still needed to let off steam. My face softened, only to become rigid again. I pivoted and ran straight into her. She ran her finger across my cheek, down my jaw and said a single word, "stop."

She knew how to control me, and I didn't like it. She opened the car door and pushed me in, and then got in the passenger seat. Her eyes stared straight into mine, not wavering for a second, forcing me to calm under her hard gaze.

"Okay. Go." I responded with the push of the gas.

Minutes passed as we drive into the darkness ahead. Palm trees passed the headlights' glare, and then flew to black in an instant. The road became sandy and Anna smiled. Stars filled the night sky and fireflies flitted about in the edge of the forest thirty yards away. High tide was coming in and so were the shells. Pink shells and small open clams washed onto the smooth white sand.

I ran to the other side of the car and opened the door. She took my arm and smiled.

"You really don't have to do this," she said as I grabbed the picnic basket from the trunk. "I already know you've had a crush on me for forever." She laughed and ran towards the water. She was like a calmer version of Melanie at the beach; calmer and more beautiful. I set down the basket and ran after the girl standing in the surf. My arms wrapped their way around her waist and her head turned to mine.
