The wet cold air blows my hair to my face as I walk by outside Martha’s house. The ground was now filled with thick piles of snow. I’m sure as hell that me and... Uh, my ‘brother’ Adam will shovel these messes at the end of the season. And if we’re not so fortunate, we might have cleaned the whole household, even out little garden.
I can feel the familiar hand taps my shoulder, “You okay there, Allie?” Jaime’s voice startles me. I spin around to see him. His new hairstyle makes him look like a misfit white monkey in the world of dark chimpanzees; his pale face with a touch of a little blush that might be caused by the freezing temperature, his dark furry coat seems to be too tight for his building body, his ripped up gloves that make him look like a wrestler – my awkward little best friend doesn’t have a taste at all.
“Yeah. It’s freezing, though.”
“I know but it would better when we’re away from those stupid skunks. I want to have some solemn moments with you, like some bonding.” He gives me a sweet smile.
I chuckled at his playfulness. He’s better off like this, unlike lately. “Great! I’d like to tell you some good and bad news. Would you like to hear it?”
“Spill the beans, Princess.”
“Well, I only have one news but this can affect us positively and negatively.” I glanced at him for some reassurance, and he nods. “Last month, I sent an e-mail request to the school supervisor for him to give me a full scholarship since I never had low grades even at grade school. At first, he told me that the slots were full but I found out that there are three more slots waiting to be filed. I talked to the vice president of our campus and he promised to help me. So... Guess what?” I grin at him like a fool, “That stupid supervisor called last night telling me that my request was granted and my documents were transferred to a new list. By the resume of classes, I will be filing new papers for the complete transfer.” My goofy grin slowly turns into a frown, “One good thing is that of the payments. My... Uh, family would not be paying big bills anymore; instead, they can give it to me so I can have my own daily allowances. The bad part, you know, being in a different section and won’t being able to spend times with you - a lonely life and a comfortable life at the same time. I don’t know how I should feel about this yet it’s giving me a good future, isn’t it Jaime?” I mentioned his name as I can see that he’s not on focus. He might be sad because I’m not having moments with him at school but he should see the brighter side. This will fulfill my dreams.
“That’s great. Keep it up.” He looks away.
“Hey... Is that all you’re gonna say?”
He turns back to me, “Allison Davis, I cannot last one day without having even a little conversation with you and I know it’s selfish. I’m still proud of you, okay?” he folds me into his arms and rubs my back. “Do your best.”
“Don’t talk to me like this is gonna be our last day together. I can still go to your house.”
He pauses for a while like he’s thinking about something deep, “No.”
“Why not? I thought you can’t last a day without me?”
“Yes, but if bringing you back to my house will lead you to this again,” he holds my wounded arm up to my eye level, “the answer will be no. Over my dead body.”
Man, he really is my best friend. “Make up your mind, Jay-me. Would you let me back to your house or not? Besides, you are not the reason why I did this. And if there would be any big reasons, you wouldn’t be one of them so stop being such a paranoid father, okay? You’re freaking me out when you’re acting like that.”
