Elliot's POV
It was an average afternoon in Sapwood, California. I stayed inside the whole day after an entire night of college work. Last night was the last night I'd have to be doing classwork. And at the time, little did I know that that night, would be the last normal time for me.
Being the neat person I am, I cleaned around my house. I was bored, actually. All of my friends attended some other university and we could only meet up during certain occasions. It sucked ass if you ask me.
I went upstairs to clean my roommate's part of the apartment, and then my phone started buzzing.
It was a phone call. But from who?
I read my phone and the caller ended up being someone from my past. One of my best friends, Michelle. Michelle had been my best friend for years! Unfortunately, after high school, we lost touch as a result of splitting paths. It hurt to stop talking to her.
But there she was, calling my cellphone? After years.
I debated whether or not I should answer the phone. The other side of my conscience won the war, and I ended up answering the phone. "Che- Michelle?"
I almost called her by her nickname, which was Chelle. I tried to avoid the name, because I didn't know if she would want to be acknowledged that way.
"Elliot?! Hi!", responded Michelle. She sounded just like her happy, jumpy self from six years ago.
Yeah, it's been six years. I've been in college since 2010 and now is my break.
"How are you?" I asked.
"I'm ecstatic. But the real question is, how are you?" she replied."I feel great. I just finished taking my exams and I'm waiting for my results!" I bragged. "Well, while you're waiting, wanna hang out?" She asked. I was so confused. She lived all the way across the country at New York.
"Haha, I wish. Too bad you're miles away!" I unhappily said.
"Oh really?" I heard the same voice, but instead from the phone, from right behind me.
I turn around in shock, there she is. Michelle Vergara! "Holy shit?! How the hell did you get in?!" I exclaimed.
"NO time to ask questions, Elli. Let's head out of here!"
She grabbed my wrist and we headed out my house. Right outside my house was a parked Mercedes-Benz. It was magical!
We hopped into Chelle's Benz and took off from there.
On the road, we started talking. "You look amazing, pal. We have a lot of catching up to do." Michelle started.
"Thanks. And we definitely do. It's been ages since we talked."
"Yeah it has. I can't believe this is happening though!" she continued as she raised her eyebrow and adjusted her long dark hair (while keeping her eyes on the road, of course).
"You're here, I'm here, and soon the whole clique will." Grinned Michelle.
I almost choked on the air I was breathing. Sorry, it was a huge chunk of oxygen.
"You're gonna have to remind me who our friends were because I forgot almost all of them!" And I wasn't kidding when I said that. I've been so busy with my school that the only people I've ever kept in touch with were my family.
"Well, there's quite a few. First, we'll be picking up Nikita and Juno at Vegas University. Then K-"
I interrupted her. "Wait wait wait wait wait wait, Nikita and Juno?! Vegas?!?!" I was so appalled. The girls actually followed their dreams! Vegas is where they've been craving to go since junior year of high school.
"YES! You won't be at your house for a long while." She responded swiftly. "Well, I won't be doing anything anyway!"
I texted my roommate to tell him I won't be home for a few weeks and to watch my dog.
"Who will we be picking up next?" I asked. "Yeah, back to that. There's Ken and Chris. They also live together, but they're all the way at New Mexico! We need to meet up soon."
I agreed to her notion. "Why do we all have to be in one place now? All of a sudden?" I considered the thought.
It took a while for Michelle to answer. "Well, I don't know how to-"
I interrupted the poor girl again. This time because she forgot one friend who was part of our clique.
"Sorry for interrupting but will we also pick up Adolf?"
Silence took over the car ride. Michelle kept staring at the road, then turned to me, eyes red and wet.
"Adolf... is the reason why I'm bringing us together. He died a few days ago in a car crash, and a week from now is his funeral. I hate how this was the reason we talked again, but it is. It's gonna bring us together." Michelle wiped her eyes and took a deep breath.
My heart dropped in shock.
I gave her a sad grin and patted her back. I'd hug her if we weren't on a highway.
"That's so.... unbelievable. I can't think of him like that." I solemnly continued.
Michelle laughed. "Hey, he wouldn't want to see us sobbing over him would he. Let's just cherish the memories you know?" She added.
I completely agreed.
"Next stop, Vegas baby!" Michelle exclaimed as she turned up the radio.
I know you're always on the night shift, but I can't stand these nights alone
The lyrics triggered me. Work From Home by Fifth Harmony. I've loved them since 2013!
"Oh yes, this is my shit!" I cried.
I knew I would enjoy the upcoming days with Michelle and the rest of the gang, but as I tell you this story, i can definitely tell you, that many other things that seemed enjoyable, would eventually and unexpectedly lead to a pending disaster that would destroy everything I sought to love.
