They started emerging from the bushes, slowly inching their way towards the three in the center of the circle of Infected. As Nineteen looked one way and the boy looked another, Sixteen still sat on the floor in a weird position, staring at the Infected eyeing her bloody, helpless condition. Sixteen wanted more than anything to calm down her heart rate; it throbbed in her chest and she could feel the beating of it. The way the Infected looked at her made Sixteen feel that they even heard her heart racing faster with every step they took towards them.
They were done for, there was nothing they could do now. They could fight, but it was like one against a million.
One Infected let out an ear-piercing scream as it lunged at Nineteen. Then, a gunshot was heard. The Infected that tried to attack Nineteen fell with a thud on the floor. Suddenly, gunshot after gunshot was heard from everywhere around them, killing Infected quickly. Some retreated back to the other parts of the forest while the rest still tried to have at Sixteen, Nineteen, and the boy.
Sixteen was scared and shocked at the same time. She didn't even realize that Nineteen and the boy were down on the ground with her until her sister brushed her arm. That made Sixteen jump.
"Stay down," Nineteen said to them as bullets were still being fired at the remaining Infected. Now there were dead twitching bodies overlapping each other that surrounded the three on the floor, blackish liquid pooling underneath the monsters.
Sixteen was frozen and she almost forgot to breathe. What was happening? Where did those gunshots come from? Now when her brain started to think again, all it could come up with was questions. Thankfully, they were questions she could answer.
"They're close," Nineteen whispered as she warily got to her feet. She helped up Sixteen, who felt like she was about to fall right back down to the ground again. The boy was already standing up, looking a little wobbly himself. A burst of pain shot through her leg, and if it weren't for Nineteen, she would've collapsed to the floor in agony. There was blood that was pouring from her opened wound, and it flowed from her injury and down to the floor slowly. Sixteen told Nineteen that she was all right when her sister had offered help; she didn't want her to worry.
It may have been a long day for all three of them, but it just kept getting worse. Pretty soon trucks were heard from a few yards away, and sounds of footsteps seemed to echo throughout the entire forest. Their day was far from over. They would be face to face soon with these people who wore masks to help them stay alive out here in the open. Their feet pounded against the forest floor, and by the sound of it, they were getting closer. The trucks were heard from the right side of them, and soon they came into view.
The three of them were watching their surroundings, their backs to each others. Sixteen kept her injured leg bent, and put all her weight on the other one. She was beginning to feel dizzy and started to see black dots everywhere. A wave of fatigue washed over her, and she felt the need to crash to the ground and fall asleep.
The trucks were here now, and they parked less than a few feet away from them. Sixteen's heart was threatening to jump right out of her chest as people in black with their odd masks began to pour out of the trucks. Not long after that, they started to come from everywhere now, their guns pointed and ready to shoot if any sudden movement was made.
They were finally caught and they couldn't run anywhere.
Sixteen stared at all of them, and so did Nineteen and the boy. Their eyes were fixed on everything around them; the people, the trucks, their weapons. No, they couldn't even take one step, or else they would pay for it.
"Don't kill them, we need them alive for the Warden," a man said, standing up with his gun on his back. He had salt and pepper hair and stubble to go with it, his dark eyes cold and holding no emotion in them. He walked back to a truck that seemed slightly bigger than he rest, and opened it.
