Sweaty, dirty, and quite irritated was a way to describe Sixteen at this point. The tunnel didn't seem to end, but that's not what bothered her. It was the noises she thought she kept hearing that made her want to turn around and figure out what it was. She heard it again, and it sounded like a bunch of footsteps; it also sounded like a faint heartbeat that seemed to get louder and louder, and she was wondering if it was her own heart pounding against her rib cage, but she felt fine. Though, there was something that chewed on her insides... anxiety? Worry? Fear? She couldn't tell.
Then she heard it again, and it made her jump and stop dead in her tracks. "I swear to you guys, I can hear something!" Her voice so serious it almost made her sound angry.
This time, Nineteen turned around to look at her sister. "I heard it, too".
The Infected turned around, and his eye colour turned vermilion. It was unusual and intriguing a at the same time to Sixteen; plus, him being an Infected and all, this was even more fascinating. "I agree with the both of you. Sixteen, you weren't kidding; I can hear it coming closer", he said. This sent a chill up Sixteen's back.
Now Sixteen was sure they weren't alone. The footsteps were coming closer, and they quickened with every thump. Sixteen saw a shadow, and then a few more.
"Run!" Sixteen yelled, and the three broke out into a sprint. The Infected was fast, and he seemed to be in front of both Nineteen and Sixteen, he seemed like the leader. He was followed by Nineteen and Sixteen right at her heels.
They were approaching a three-way split in the tunnel.
"C'mon, I have to remember this!" The Infected growled. He came to a sudden halt, then went straight.
"Are you... sure you know... where you're going?" Sixteen was coming close to running out of breath, but she pushed herself. She could run much longer than this, but for some reason, it was like there was some type of weight in her stomach keeping from running at the pace she wanted to.
"I'm sure now!" He shouted back to her.
There were more splits in the tunnel than before, but the path they were taking seemed to go straight forward.
I hope you do know where you're going, she thought.
They kept running and Sixteen felt like her throat felt like it was being scratched raw. The running seemed as endless as the tunnel, but when they came to a sudden stop, that all changed.
She put her hands on her knees and breathed heavily. As did the Infected and her sister. Why did they stop?
Sixteen, still panting, looked up, and saw that the tunnel was never finished. They were stuck inside of here also.
"I thought you said you knew where you were going!" Sixteen shouted quickly at him. She was furious. And out of breath.
"I know what I said!" He glared at her.
She returned the glare right back. "Then why are we at a dead end?" She shot at him.
The boy dropped his gaze and stared at the walls of dirt that surrounded them. "Look, it may seem strange, but I didn't forget about this" The Infected referred to the tunnel that they stood in.
"Wait, so you're saying that you still have memories of this?" Nineteen asked.
He nodded, "But they're very faint. I only remember bits and pieces, so don't be so hard on me", he shot a glance at Sixteen.
Sixteen stared at him. He was right... just a little right. Sixteen wasn't exactly being hard on him; or, at least she didn't see it that way. She was angry, but not directly at him. Sure, he lead them to a dead end, but it wasn't his fault and she should've known this much. She was just fumed about them not ever finding a way out of this situation. She sighed, "Sorry", she muttered under her breath.
