Preston had told Elizabeth to close her eyes. "Go ahead and open your eyes peaches," Preston said, taking his hand off of her face. He placed his head on her shoulder and put arms around her torso. Liz eyes sparkles as she saw the giant oak tree covered in warm colored leaves. A beautiful bench swing hung from a strong branch. Leaves blanketed the swing. "Amazing," Liz whispered as she held Preston's arms against her stomach. "Wanna sit with me," he whispered placing his mouth against her ear. It sent chills down her spine. He led her to the swing and they sat. Elizabeth sat close to Preston, who put his arm atop her shoulder. "This is a special place. You can talk about anything, the wind got your back. You can cry, the crunching leaves make it so you can't hear. You're the only person I've ever shared this place with. The shrubs and large rocks surrounding it makes it hard to see it. I found it when I was little. I got lost and I stumbled here," Preston explained while rubbing her arm. "Why would you show me this," Liz asked. "Because your more special to me than this place is," he responded. He put his index finger under Elizabeth's chin and pulled her close. Preston gave her a long kiss on her forehead. "Preston," Liz said softly looking up into his eyes. Preston closed his eyes, tilted his head, and leaned in close. Elizabeth didn't know what to do. Do I want Preston to be my first kiss, she thought. Just then, a leaf floated into Preston's mouth. He started spitting and coughing . Liz started laughing uncontrollably. Preston looked away and covered his face in embarrassment. "Don't worry. That was adorable," Liz said. She put her hand on his cheek and kissed the other. "I have to go. I had a great time. Can we do this again sometime?" Liz said. "Can I walk you home?" Preston asked. They walk out of the shrubbery. And this time Elizabeth took his hand. They walked home in silence, but the silence said everything.
When they got to her house Preston put his hand on her cheek and said, "Good bye peaches." Out of the blue Liz stepped forward into his arms. She embraced him tightly, her face buried in his chest. "Thank you," she said pulling him closer.
They stayed like that for a while. They finally pulled apart and Liz stepped inside her house. Instantly she slammed her back into the door and slid to the ground. Her mom was sitting on the sofa. "What am I doing mom?" Liz asked her mother. "Do they know about each other, honey?" Ms Panchum asked. "Of course. But I think I'm leading them on. James isn't even speaking to me now," Elizabeth responded. "Come here," her mom said holding her arms out to Liz, and like a magnet, she flew into them. "I don't exactly know what's going on with you, but I have a mom instinct that you need me," Karin said stroking her daughter's hair. "Mom, why did I have to have this complicated middle school life," Liz said as another tear developed in hey eye. "Do you mean why did you have to be the one that two great boys are in love with," her mother said brushing the hair out of her face. Liz smiled and replied, "Three, actually." They both laughed. Liz looked out the window and saw a tree that reminded her mighty oak. "So," Karin said," when will I meet the third one." Elizabeth placed her hand on her left cheek and said," From my calculations, soon."
Elizabeth went upstairs to her bed room. She sat where James had once sat. The material of the seat cushion dried very slowly. She could see where James's tears had fallen onto it. "A cool kid, a bad boy, and a prince. Well, I guess the cool kid's out of the race... no. I won't give up on him. I don't even care if he doesn't date me. I need him in my life. Same for the others," Liz said quietly to herself, her tears mimicking James'. "You okay, sweetie?"Ms Panchum said, slowly opening the door. This made Liz jump up, she wiped the tears off her cheeks. "Yeah mom, I'm fine," she said trying to hide her face casually. Karin felt horrible, her daughter was literally breaking down from inside out, and she couldn't do anything. "Well, I made a reservation for that Chinese restaurant you like. The one with the really good bamboo shoots. We don't have to go, if you don't want to," Karin said leaning her head against the door. Liz lifted her head and softly said," No, I want to go. That sounds good." She got up, put her shoes on and said, "It will be a good distraction." They walked out the door.
They got home around eight. Elizabeth went strait to bed. Feel asleep after an hour of tossing around. Though out the night Karin checked in with her daughter. I'll do my best to help you, baby, she thought, No matter what.
