The Awakening Pt.12

        "Nurse! Nurse! Something's happening!" Liz yelled as she faintly limped into the hall. Doctors and nurses were everywhere, and Liz was shoved to the back of the room. Preston's right eye opened first, then his left. "What happened?"he asked hazily. "He's awake!" Doctor Shepherd announced. Preston looked around with questioning eyes," Well, yeah I'm awake. Who are all of you?" The doctors introduced themselves one-by-one. "Great, now that we're all a happy little family, can someone tell me what happened?" Preston said in his usual sarcastic tone. Liz stepped in front of everyone," I can." Preston's eyes lit up and a smile grew, along with tears," Peaches!" Elizabeth walked up to him and gave him a tight embrace; she then pulled back, just slightly, so that her lips would meet his. They pulled away, but Liz's hands remained on his chest. "You woke up. I can't believe it," Liz said as a tear rolled down her face. "Well, that's what sleeping people do, isn't it? Why is everyone saying that?"Preston questioned. "Hun, you have been in a coma for about a month. Do you really not remember?"Liz asked as she placed a hand on his cheek. Preston was about to answer when he looked behind Liz and saw he staff all teary eyed, like they had been watching a soap opera or something. "Can we have a little privacy, please?" he asked as he nodded towards the door. As they filed out of the room, Preston made eye contact with Elizabeth once again. "The last thing I can remember is trying to call out to you when they took you down a different hallway," Preston answered as he covered her hand with his. "Don't ever do that again, okay?" Liz demanded as she wiped Preston's tears. "Listen, anytime you're in danger and I'm around, I will try my best to save you. Even if volcanoes were involved," Preston chuckled. 

      They talked for about a half an hour more until the doctors had to do some checkups and tests. Karin showed up and hugged him and formally introduced herself. Liz left to use the restroom and left Preston alone with the original nurse (the one from day one), and she chose to spark up a conversation. "Your girlfriend is quite the character," she said. "Oh, she's not my girlfriend," Preston answered disappointingly. "Oh, well when you two were admitted to this hospital, she said she was your girlfriend," she replied as she gave him some pills. "Really?" he asked excitedly. "Yeah, and this whole time, she never left your side. She slept on three chairs lined up next to your bed," the nurse explained. Liz returned, and the nurse left. "So, I'm your boyfriend?" he asked in a cocky tone. Liz was shocked, but then let out a shy smile," So, your name is Arnold?" Preston jointed up, which hurt his arm, "What? Who told you that? Arnold sounds like a stupid kid who would get beat up all the time." "And that's why you changed it?" Liz questioned with a smirk, "And as for your question, it depends on how you feel." "Is this your way of asking me out, Peaches? If so, I don't know. I'll have to think about it," Preston said as he looked away from her. "What?" Liz asked, full of despair. He looked back at her and instantly regretted saying that," I was just kidding! Of course I'll go out with you!" He reached up with his non-broken hand and held her cheek," I love you."  Liz laughed, causing her partner to do the same. There was a knock at the door that startled them both. "May I come in?" a low voice asked. "Um, yes?" Liz answered as she stood up suspiciously. Officer Tybalt walked into the room with his little note pad and pen. "I'm here to ask you some questions, Mr. Viper," he stated as he pulled a chair up to the hospital bed. "Can you chill? I just came out of a coma," Preston asked. "I understand, but we need your story to get to a conclusion on this investigation," the detective said solemnly. "Alright. Liz could you please?" Preston gestured towards the door. Liz nodded and left quietly.

     "I'm gonna ask you a few questions and I want you to answer them truthfully." "How else would I respond? I'm not the accused." "Moving on. Where were you when this was taking place?" "I was talking to my first period teacher." "About?" "Why I failed my exam." "And after that?" "When we were done talking, I was heading to my second period class when I saw this guy holding Peaches by the neck." "Excuse me?" "Elizabeth." "I would appreciate it if you would refrain from using pet names during this." "It's a habit." "Can you identify the 'guy'" "I don't know his name, but I could spot that bastard any day." "And after you saw Ms. Panchum being strangled?" "He threw her through the window on the east side of the school. I tried to stop him, but I was to late. Instead I jumped out after her and cushioned her fall." "And why would you risk your life for her?" "Because I love her." ... "That is all. Thank you for your time." 

      The detective stepped into the hallway and finished up notes. "You can go back in there now. Expect a call from us later, Ms. Panchum," he said as he put on his aviators and walked away.
