I. Do I Know Myself? (What kind of Person am I?)
I gain a lot of knowledge about myself as I study about Metaphysics. Upon knowing myself as a substance, an individual that has multiple perfections or a suppositum, I knew a lot about my characteristics not just only as a substance but as a person.
I am a "person, an individual substance of a rational nature (individua substantia rationalis naturae)." I am "a particular type of suppositum: one which possesses a spiritual nature. (Alvira, et al. p. 123).
A person "as the image of God has an exalted dignity manifested by numerous perfections," (Alvira, et al. p. 125). Some of these perfections which I possess are: my freedom, responsibility, friendship or benevolent love and ability to direct myself towards God.
I exercise my freedom everyday as I face different situations. The decisions I choose reflects what kind of person I am. My freedom partners my responsibility since the consequences of what I choose always wait for me. I am aware whether my decision is right or wrong because, as a person, I can distinguish what is good and what is bad. I am responsible for what I am doing and I deserve taking the consequences of what I have done.
Also the friendship or benevolent love which I can give to other persons, especially my friends and family members, mirrors the fullness of my personality. As Fr. Marlou have said in his Homily, "to love the unlovable is the highest level of love." I, as a person, have the capacity to love my Creator, which points us to a reality that I have the ability to direct myself towards God.
