My eyes open and I stare at the white ceiling above me.
Thankfully, I'm no longer in that nightmare when I'm getting beaten (nearly to death!) by Jack.
Slowly I lift up my arms and see I have a needle in my arm. One looks like it is connected to a bag of clear liquid. There's also a plastic square over my heart. There's a cord coming out of the square and is hooked up to a machine that has up and down lines, like an outline of a mountain.
Up and down. Strait. Down and Up.
I think it's a heart monitor, but I've never seen one with a patch that needs to go over the pacient's heart.
With the arm that doesn't have any needles or anything in it, I touch the my ribs.
I poke at one of them and I muffle a scream.
Something definitely got hurt seriously.
When I look down I see that I am covered with a fluffy white blanket and a thin green one. The green one looks like it was knit by someone.
Turning to my right I see a sleeping boy.
He is hooked up to a monitor too.
"Collin." I rasp out.
Collin looks at ease when he sleeps. He looks, peaceful.
Just think that you saved him.
A flicker of motion catches my eye.
Sitting in a chair is a girl with blonde hair and dark blue eyes. The girl who saved me.
My voice kills me and my ribs hurt just to breathe, but I think she deserves to know how grateful I am to her.
"Thank you," I say to the girl. "Thank you for going to get help. For saving me."
The girl jumps a little at the sound of my voice.
She looks around for the voice until she sees me staring at her.
"Oh, you're welcome. I was there to watch Collin's fight you see, then when Jack almost broke his leg, you came in. I guess I should be the one to thank you. You were the one who stepped up to save Collin. I don't know what I'd do without him." says the girl.
Was this girl his girlfriend? How do she know him?
Why are you so concerned?
"How do you know him?" I ask.
"He is my brother. For he is my only family left. Both our parents got killed in a freak fire accident at work." says the girl.
"What's your name?" I ask curiously.
"Amberly, but most people call me Amber." responds Amberly.
"Oh, well it's nice to meet you. I'm Kaytilynn." I say.
"I know. Collin talked about you a lot when he came home from his first fake death ceremony. He said that he found a girl named Kaytilynn and how she had the strength to survive here." Amber says. "He said that if she were to ever get here than he would love to-"
"Now Amber, why are you spilling out all my secrets?" says a voice.
I turn my head away from Amber to see Collin pressing a button, making the half, from his waist to head, of his bed sit up.
I look down at my bed and see a white box with 4 buttons. Up, Down, Help and TV. Hitting the UP button, my bed start to incline so I can see him clearly.
"Collin?"
"Yes fruitcake?" Collin asks with a grin.
"You know if I wasn't 95% broken right now, I'd smack you." I snap.
Collin laughs, but winces.
I raise my eyebrow.
"I'm fine! Just, broken." Collin says, holding his side.
"You're talking?! So am I!" I exclaim.
"I'll go and alert the nurses that the two of you are up." Amber says with a smile.
Before she walks out of the room she whispers in my ear, "Be careful around trouble some people like him."
Amber points at Collin and I grin.
"What'd you say about me Amber?!" Collin asks, sitting up.
"Nothing!" Amber says smiling, racing out of the door.
"I like her." I say to Collin.
"I'll hunt her down later..." Collin says to himself.
"Why? She reminds me of you." I say.
"But she doesn't have my good looks!" Collin complains.
I find myself blushing.
STOP
"No, she has better looks." I say, unable to keep a strait face.
"You're so mean to me!" Collin complains.
"I'm sorry." I say.
"Sure." Collin says sarcastically.
For a little bit, there is complete silence.
"Thank you Katilynn. For saving me back there. I really owe you." Collin says flatly.
I want to say something cool like "Oh, I don't care!", but I couldn't.
The way he actually said my name.
Katilynn.
I liked it. So many people have called me over my lifetime, but just the way he said it.
Wait! Am I crushing on this kid?
NO. Of course not.
"Whatever, it wasn't that big of a deal." I say casually.
"Seriously?" Collin asks. "Kaytilynn, you saved my life back there. If you hadn't come in, I'd be dead!"
I flinched when he said 'dead'.
"I have an amazing idea!" Collin says.
"What?" I ask, smiling.
"The two of us, since you're here now become a dynamic duo!" Collin exclaims.
I start laughing. "A dynamic duo?"
"Yes! Like Batman and Robin and..." Collin stumbles.
"What? Does Mr. Eastman not know his superheroes?" I tease.
"Shut up fruitcake! The two of us can be... We can be partners in Crime! Solving problems and look at books and stuff!" Collin says.
"I don't like books..." I say.
"Okay, we'll get rid of the book part. So what do you say sidekick?" Collin asks.
"What?! Why am I the sidekick?" I exclaim, sitting up.
"Because I am clearly way awesomer than you." Collin says.
"Says the boy who almost got beat to death and saved by ME." I spit.
"True. Very True. Okay, how about we figure that out if we do become partners?" Collin offers.
"Sure. Before we become a dynamic duo, can we at least be friends first? I barely even know you!" I say.
"Sure, sure. Whatever." he says.
I start laughing.
"So???" Collin asks.
"Okay. We can be friends." I say with a wide grin on my face.
"Great!" Collin says, flinging his legs out from under the blankets.
The stupid person he is, he stands up and jumps up and down once.
That's when a small yelp escaped his mouth when his feet touched the ground again from just that small impact.
"Oh Collin." I say.
Through the pain in his face he says, "I call being the main guy. You can be the sidekick."
"Collin!" I yell at him.
I walked into that one.
Watching Collin struggle with moving his legs, I decide if he deserves to be helped. He did just trick me and has insulted me many times. However, I seem to forget all the rude things he's done to me for a few seconds.
Slowly, I get out of my bed and walk over to help him back onto his bed.
Despite how rude he's been to me, I don't care. I help him anyway, because that's what friends do. They help each other.
