The Invasion (Part 2 of the KaiSoo Fanfic Series)

Chapter 13

He's confused and he doesn't know what to think about what he just witnessed. He'd like to think that it's all just a misunderstanding and that he just walked in at the wrong time. That's what he hopes it is. But the look of guilt that's sitting on Hyunsik's face is telling him otherwise.

"What's going on?" he asks again, taking a couple of steps closer to him this time. "Why were Taemin and Krystal threatening you like that?"

"I-I, um..." Hyunsik is panicking inside as he scrambles his brain for an answer. "I-I...it's nothing really. Just forget it. I-It didn't happen."

"But it did happen," Kyungsoo says, stopping Hyunsik from walking away before he can get too far. Hyunsik spins back around but not completely, just enough to be able to see Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo exhales and steps out of the doorway, striding over to him with light footsteps. "I won't get mad if you tell me," he says, his voice softer and less critical than before. Hyunsik exhales while still looking at the other out of the corner of his eyes. "I mean, I'll try not to get mad, but..." He pauses but never finishes. "We've both been through a lot and I just want everything to be okay."

It's as if Hyunsik's conscience kicks in at that moment because he sighs heavily and turns around, running a hand through his hair. "I do want to tell you, Kyungsoo," he starts to say, "but I'm afraid that by doing that, I'll be putting you and Jongin and even all of your friends in danger."

"What?" he replies, confused now. "How could the truth put us in danger?" Hyunsik's now feeling like he's stuck between a rock and a hard place; if he tells Kyungsoo exactly what he wants to hear, he'll be upset and might never trust him again. But if he tells him only part of the truth or none of it at all, he'll still be upset and never trust him again when he does find out. Not to mention that the time he finds out might be when it's too late for him to take any preventative actions. He sighs in unrest and looks at Kyungsoo's blinking face. He can see the confusion all over his face, which makes him feel guilty for even considering to continue lying to him. In that way, he's just like his father; he's never been able to keep the truth from anyone.

"Because it's not the truth that you want to hear," he ends up saying as he lightly shakes his head, but his words still leave Kyungsoo in the dark. "You and Jongin came here thinking you'd find the truth that would lead you to your past lives and your families; you came for the good truth. But that's exactly the kind of truth we don't have here."

"Then what kind of truth do you have here?" responds Kyungsoo. "It wouldn't have anything to do with what just happened with Taemin and Krystal, would it?"

Hyunsik sighs again. "I wasn't even here for three months when I first found out," he starts to describe. "I didn't think it was possible for them because they were so nice and welcoming toward me, wanted to help me recover and start to lead the life I was meant to have. I tried to hide it from them, the fact that I knew, for as long as I could. Taemin was the first one to notice how I started acting weird whenever they were around and I guess it didn't take him too long to figure out why." Pausing, he exhales, unleashing a gust of air into the atmosphere. "They made me a deal that if I kept quiet, they'd let me see my dad again, but I backed out of it before they could fulfill their end of it."

Kyungsoo's eyebrows are furrowed deeply as he shakes his head faintly from side to side. "I hear you, but none of this is making sense," he says. "What are you talking about? Who's they and what did you find out?"

Hyunsik looks Kyungsoo right in the eyes as he parts his lips. "The spies that Onew was talking about before," he confesses with an overwhelming amount of guilt, "they aren't anyone they're planning on questioning. The spies are Taemin and Krystal."

It's at that moment Kyungsoo feels his heart drop to the very bottom of his stomach.

"W-Wha--how?" he says in a voice that stutters. "Taemin and Krystal...but why? Why would they want to hurt us?"
