It's actually really hard to find an ugly, nerdy girl so that's the best I could do!

Chapter Two: Riley

No matter how many times I switch schools, it never gets any easier. This would be my third time switching school since I started high school and every time I’m still super nervous. I ran a quivering hand through my naturally wavy hair as I followed the student council member to my first class.

“Good thing we have homeroom together, otherwise I’d have to leave you here by yourself.” He said in hopes of making our journey less awkward, though it didn’t help though. I felt a sudden pang of guilt for forgetting his name; I think it was Jace or something. I made a face, what kind of name is Jace?

We entered a door at the end of the corridor and entered a small class of only fifteen. All of the students turned from their friends to stare right at me. I looked at my feet and nervously fiddled with my backpack’s strap.

“Hey Mrs. Skinner, this is Riley; our new student.” Jace said grinning.  Mrs. Skinner barely looked up; she simply nodded and turned back to her computer. Jace led me to a circular table in the back of the small room.  Five seats sat around it and three of them were occupied. Jace sat down and nodded at the seat next to him, motioning for me to join them.

“Mace, who’s your friend?”  A guy with short brown and a nice build asked loudly.

Oops, I thought, guess I was wrong about his name. Still, what kind of name is Mace?

“This is Riley, he’s new.” Mace then pointed to each person at the table, introducing each one. A pretty girl with long blonde hair was Ally, the one that asked Mace about me was Johnny, and the last one was Zoey. Zoey was unlike the others, she wasn’t very cute and she shied away at the sight of me. However, she seemed… different.

I sat down next to her and observed her without anyone noticing. She had short, thin brown hair that fell to her round chin. Her pale face was covered with a mixture of freckles and pimples that seemed to skip her too-long nose.

“Where’d you come from, Riley?” Ally asked. She said it sweetly but I could tell she was putting up a front; something about this girl scared the living shit out of me.

                “Oregon,”

“Then what the hell are you doing in Cali?” Johnny asked bluntly.

The conversation went on like this until the bell rang, dismissing us from homeroom. Mace suddenly grabbed my schedule from my hands, causing a paper cut across my palm.

“Whoa, dude, you have the same schedule as Zoey!” He said in his stupid surfer accent.

God I hate California, it’s only been an hour and I want to punch a kid. Zoey seemed to notice this and looked up at me hesitantly. Being as secretive as possible, she leads me away from the group of people and towards our next class.

“Listen, I know he’s annoying but it isn’t going to help wanting to punch him.”

My eyes bulge out of my head and my heart stops, “How’d you-“

“I’m good at reading people.” She smiles lightly and shrugs, “They’re good friends though, you just have to get used to them.”

My heart pounds faster as I stare at her, no one has ever understood me so well. This girl has found out more about in two seconds than my parents in seventeen years.

“Come on,” her smile grows a little bit as she motions for me to follow, “We’re gonna be late for class.”
