Chapter Four: Zoey

The cafeteria was alive with excitement today; rumors were flying around like flies by a dead body. It was madness. Ally, Riley, Mace, Lizzy, Johnny, and I sat at our usual table, listening to accusations whip around about our least favorite person.

Ally was in an unusually good mood today; the one person she hated the most was about to die a social death, “Looks like Miss Beth Jones got what was coming for her!”

                “Who?” Riley chimed in.

“Beth Jones is the queen bitch of the school, ruined many of our lives.” I said sadly and with a hint of drama. The only people she hasn’t totally ruined would be Jace, Riley, and I. Johnny, Ally, and Lizzy unfortunately clashed with her; especially Ally. Have you ever wondered why two beautiful people like Ally and Johnny weren’t popular? Beth Jones.

Johnny made a face a face, “God I hate that bitch.” Once upon a time, Johnny was the most popular boy in our school. With Ally as Queen Bee and him as King Bee, the school wasn’t half bad. They were only jerks to the people who were jerks to them. Then Beth Jones moved here. She instantly climbed the popularity ladder, reaching rung number two. In order to get to the top and get Mr. King Bee himself, Beth had to knock Ally off. And that’s exactly what she did. It was actually surprisingly simple; tell a few lies and BAM. Ally was down in nerd city with Jace, Lizzy, and I. With Beth as the most popular girl, she moved to stage two; get Johnny Ricci. However, he publicly embarrassed her. She asked him out (can you believe that? What kind of girl asks out a guy?) and he flatly said no. Well, not exactly. His exact words were, “Why the hell would I want to go out with a girl like you?” with tears in her eyes, she shakily asked why. “Cause I’m in love with ally! That’s why!” that was the end of Johnny’s reign.  People just lost interest in him. He’s still popular, just not as much.

“Hey, you never would’ve met your best friend without her!”  Mace yelped happily.

“Bro, you’re right!” he exclaimed before turning to me, “Zoey, without that skank over there, I never would’ve met you!”

                “Wait, what?”  Mace asked sadly.

As the two bickered like an old married couple, Beth Jones herself walked in. The whole room went dead silent. She used her long legs to glide across the floor, straight to the table the popular kids always sat at.  After a while, the chattering sped up again and everything went back to normal. Beth had shown no emotion, thus no one cared about them anymore.

“What were the rumors anyway?” Lizzy asked, finally speaking up.

“That she got caught hooking up in the boy’s locker room!”

We all exploded into laughter, causing other students to turn and stare at us. Not that’s we cared, having fun was more valuable than being viewed as normal.

After our last period, we decided to make arrangements for this weekend.

“My grandparents own a beach house down in Venice,” Mace volunteered. “We can drive down there and stay for the weekend.”

Johnny instantly jumped into the air. We were walking to our cars so it looked quite funny when he suddenly leaped a few feet off the ground. “Yes! Oh my god that’s a great idea!”

And so it was decided, next weekend we would make the three hour drive to Venice beach for the weekend. No homework, no drama, and especially no Beth Jones.

                Or so we thought.
