I stare at the empty seat next to me, remembering a girl. A girl who once made me smile. Who once made me laugh. Who was always there for me when I needed her.

The day I met her.. who knew she would become my best friend. I only thought of her as a mere classmate. Nothing more. She was a friendly and optimistic girl, which I found a bit annoying. How is it possible for somebody to be THAT optimistic about everything? Seriously.

On the other hand, I'm more of a pessimistic person. School sucks, all of my classes sucks, pretty much life sucks. I don't have friends. I do, however, have a if-you-come-near-me-I-will-strangle-you kinda face. Just an average looking guy and definitely not considered popular. I'm just.. nothing. A loner, perhaps? Either way, nobody ever tries to talk to me. I don't blame them though.

I was surprised when she approached me. The first word she said to me was, "Hi!" My response was almost as lame as my life, "Uh.." I've always been socially awkward and that was the first time, in a long time, that somebody actually acknowledged me.

A year went by and well, we became best friends. I think I actually got more optimistic because of her. She actually made me smile and laugh, I didn't think it was possible for her to do that.

The day I met her.. who knew I would fall in love with her. It's stupid, I hate these feelings. I want to crush these feelings with my foot. Stupid, stupid feelings. Why is it that I develop feelings for people who won't ever like me back? That is why they call it a 'crush' for a reason, right? Because they crush your heart.

Whenever she smiles, I can't help but smile. Whenever she touches my shoulder or slaps my arm, just that can drive my heart crazy. Wow, I sound so cheesy. But, the main reason why I fell for her is because of her kindness. If there's trash on the ground, she picks it up. Homeless people? She buys food for them, sometimes even pillows and blankets.

The thing is, she wasn't rich at all nor was she poor. The money she has, she earned it herself from doing chores. Her kindness is unbelievable and I'll admit that I've been picking up trash as well. The things she does to me.. unbelievable.

The day I met her.. who knew I would lose her so quickly. It's my fault.. all my fault. It should've been me. We were at the park and we both decided to get ice cream from the ice cream parlor that's across the street. I was going to buy them, but she sat me back down and went to buy them. She didn't do anything wrong. She was patiently waiting to cross the street. Right when there's a walking person on the signal, she crossed the street. She should've looked both ways. A drunk driver was speeding and hit her. I heard people screaming and I immediately ran to the scene.

It should've been me laying there. It should've been me struggling to say something. It should've been me slowly dying. Everything was blurry and I remember holding her, "Hang in there. You'll survive. The ambulance are on their way."

She smiled and slowly placed a hand on my cheek, "Don't.. cry. Remember.. what I told you..?"

"Smile through the pain?" I struggled to say as the tears kept on spilling out. "How-..." I breathed heavily. "How does one do that? Especially if their best friend is dy-.." I couldn't finish my sentence.

"...Dying. I'm not going to survive.. (C/N). I want to l-let you know.. that I'm happy.. very happy.. that you've opened up.. to me. You're an incredible.. and strong person, remember that.."

"Stop.. you're going to survive! I know you will. What happened to the optimistic girl I've always known?"

She smiled, "I'll always.. be here for you, okay? In-..." She took her hand off of my cheek and placed my hand over my heart with her hand on top of mines. "...Here."

"STOP IT, YOU'LL SURVIVE IDIOT. Don't.. leave me.. please. I.. love you." I sobbed. "You understand me. You're always there for me-"

"...I love you too." She mumbled as her hand slowly falls limp. "Smile, (C/N)." Her eyes stare dully up at me as she took her last breath.

The bell rings.

"Hey (C/N), are you okay?"

I wipe away the tears quickly, looking at my best friend. "Yeah I'm fine."

He pats my back, "Thinking about her?"

"Yeah.." I sigh, grabbing my backpack.

"I know it has been a year since she.. passed away.. but I know that it's hard to go through that alone.. if you ever need to talk, I'm here."

I smile, "Thanks man. Lets head to lunch."

Taking out my phone, I stare at my lock screen and smile sadly.

"I miss you, (Y/N)."
