CHAPTER NINE

Jack had been walking for what seemed like hours. The landscape had not varied. Even though the road wound gently through fields, small groves of trees, over smooth inclines and down into small valleys, the mountain seemed as far away as ever. He passed little brooks of sparkling water rushing over stones. The croaking of frogs joined the massed ranks of insects and birds. Jack wasn’t tired. This surprised him. This body of his could go on forever. Maybe it was meant too. He stopped a brook and dipped his hands into the water, letting it wash through his fingers. He drank from cupped hands and was instantly refreshed. He had never tasted water like it before. Or maybe he had never tasted water properly.
