CHAPTER TWELVE

Ernie Mason was contemplating his life looking out from the large studio attic window of the top floor apartment of the Madigan’s house in Patchin Mews. Old man Petrovich had been shrewd. He still owned a number of properties in the Village, snapped up when rents were cheap.

Mason was contrasting life in the milieu of the Village with his recent life in the South Bronx. He decided there and then that he was never going to return except as the temporary boss of the Refuge. How that place had survived in his old neighborhood he still couldn’t figure out. How a guy like Jack Madigan could come and go down by the Concourse was astonishing. But the Refuge had the blessing of the mixed race ghetto leaders, there was no doubt about that. And Mason was sure that the old guy Abraham was something to do with its protection.
