CHAPTER ELEVEN
Looking at the city from the perimeter, Jack realised it was an optical illusion. You couldn’t quite see where it ended and where it began. There were streets, yes, fairly broad golden thoroughfares but after you had a fix on them all you had to do was look away for an instant and when you looked back they had changed, or even vanished completely.
Jack’s encounter with his father had been a deeply emotional experience. There had been so many things he had wanted to say, so many things he had kept buried for so long. When it came to it, he had hardly said anything. Somehow there hadn’t seemed to be any need to. Maybe all you ever needed to say to someone else could be summed up in a couple of words or even a gesture. Now his father was gone and before Jack could see Kerry, he had to make his peace with Larry. This wasn’t going to be easy. Jack was trying desperately to keep his mind fixed on his own reality. Realising that his present position could rightly be described as illusory, it was, paradoxically, more real than anything he had experienced before. He seemed to have uncluttered access to his own emotions and the power of them had simply terrified him a couple of times. It was clear to him that human beings were protected in a way from untrammelled cosmic experience. These were about the only words he could find to describe what he was, he now realised, privileged to be experiencing.
