As Nevada walked into the agency, I grinned from my place behind the couch. Upon hearing the door shut, I popped up. "Hi, Nev! Do you know what today is?" I asked of her immediately.
Nevada flinched slightly, but I took no notice to it. "Uh... Monday?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No, silly!" I exclaimed. I normally would have hit her playfully on the arm, but today, I was far too happy to engage in such actions.
"Um... The seventeenth of October?" she questioned. I could tell that she was still stumped. Was it really that hard for her to remember?
I let out a sigh. "It's been three hundred sixty five days since my last birthday," I told her after slight hesitation. I didn't want to resort to such simple ways of telling her, but what choice did I have at this point? She was practically clueless.
Nevada gasped and ran at me, encasing me in a tight hug. I smiled and hugged her back. "Happy birthday, Butterfly!" she exclaimed into my ear.
I ignored my probable hearing loss and grinned. "It took you long enough to notice."
"Y-yeah... Sorry about that," Nevada apologized, rubbing the back of her head.
"It's okay," I assured her, placing an arm on her shoulder. "And since it's my birthday, I was hoping I could decide what we do today."
"Shoot," Nevada told me, a smile creeping onto her lips.
I dragged her into the back room of the agency, also known as the bedroom I shared with Cotoli. I took a seat on the bottom bunk of the bunk bed and pulled Nevada down so she was doing the same. "Well, you see that TV over there?" I asked her, pointing to the TV propped up on the wall.
Nevada nodded. "What about it?"
"What if we watched my favorite movie for my birthday?" I asked her, a sly smile creeping onto my lips. I couldn't wait for her to see what it was. She'd be so excited!
"That sounds okay," Nevada agreed.
At hearing her say this, I grabbed the blanket I had prepared for the occasion off of the floor and wrapped it around our shoulders. I laid my head onto her shoulder and turned on the TV via the remote.
The title screen appeared after a few advertisements. Nevada turned to me upon seeing it, her face as red as a cherry tomato. "This... This movie... I think I've heard of it," she said to me. Her face contorted in thought.
I sighed. "You don't remember?"
"Of course I do, Butterfly! I was just kidding," Nevada told me, smiling. "Isn't this the first movie we saw together when we first started dating?"
I nodded violently. "Yep! I got it on DVD from Cotoli for my birthday this morning, and since it's something special that we share, I figured that if I was going to watch it at home, I'd want you to be there."
Nevada shrunk into her scarf. The four hamsters that lived inside all popped out and crawled onto her shoulders and head, noticing that their space was being invaded. "T-thanks..." Nevada said quietly, voice barely above a whisper.
"And since the Devas are out, they can join the party!" I exclaimed. I watched Alon-Z scuttle down Nevada's right arm before jumping into my lap, where she laid down. I stroked her back gently. Alon-Z was always adorable like this.
Nevada nuzzled my head slightly, making me gasp. I wasn't used to this sort of treatment... But I would gladly take it anyways. My guess was that it was Nevada's way of giving me a birthday surprise in her own way.
Or she was doing this all off the top because she forgot...
But either way, I was liking it!
Nevada looked down at the remote then back to me. I knew what she was implying instantly, so I reached for the remote and pointed it for the TV. I tried to press the play button time and time again, but each time, nothing happened.
A sigh escaped my lips. "I swear..." I muttered, already knowing what had happened. While we were getting comfy for the movie, the remote had gone and died on us. Stupid remote... It's almost as fun ruining as the assassins that like to hide around the city... And believe me, that's saying a lot.
"What's wrong?" Nevada asked of me curiously.
"The remote died," I replied with a sigh. "I guess I'll have to go and get the batteries out of the kitchen..."
Suddenly, a thought hit. I remembered that Cotoli and I had used the last of our batteries on the Wii remote we had lent to Polly a week ago after their dog, Nelson, had chewed up their old remote. We had no batteries, and since the TV had no play button on its surface, the movie wasn't going to work.
Why now of all times...?
"You look like the personification of doom, you know," Nevada commented to me with a slight frown. "Are you okay?"
I sighed and nodded. "Yeah. We just won't be able to watch our movie like I had planned. We're out of batteries," I explained.
"That's okay," Nevada assured me. She pulled me into a hug, making me blush wildly. "After all, I still have to give you your birthday gift."
"Really?" I asked, tilting my head.
Nevada nodded and pulled out a small bracelet. It had a small teal and silver butterfly on it. "I was going to give this to you today, birthday or not, so..."
I gasped and took the bracelet from her. "This is beautiful!" I exclaimed, slipping it around my wrist.
"I figured you'd like it..." Nevada whispered, her face bright red.
"I do. Thank you," I smiled. I leaned in and pecked her on the cheek. Even if today hadn't gone entirely according to plan, I still had to admit that it was one of the best birthdays I'd had in a long time.
