Two days passed by and not once did Matt explain himself. He went on as if nothing ever happened. I stayed silent, and tried to put it in the back of my mind, waiting impatiently with worry. He approached my front door at six on the dot that snowy Christmas night and rang the doorbell.
I leapt up from the couch to answer with Tyler in tow, excited about meeting Matt for the first time. Christmas was literally at my doorstep when I opened the door to find Matt standing before me with foil trays, complete with a Santa hat and snow glistening in his hair not covered by the hat.
“Merry Christmas!” He was pleasantly cheery as he carried the scent of the holidays into my doorway.
“Wow, look at all that food. How did you ring the doorbell?”
Tyler jumped in front of me to help Matt.
Matt handed off two of the trays to Tyler and replied. “I used my elbow.”
I giggled and let Matt into the living room, introducing Tyler and Matt. “’Sup, Matt, heard a lot about ya.”
“Nice to finally meet you, too.” Matt looked in my direction and winked, “So, what did she tell you?”
“Oh, geez. Just follow Tyler and put all that on the kitchen counter.”
Matt followed behind Tyler and I into the kitchen and
they placed the trays on the center island, then shared a man moment and fist bumped before Matt made his way over to my side and gave me a bear hug, almost crushing my ribcage.
Luckily, Kylie's muffled voice came over us from upstairs “Hey!” Kylie called from the upstairs bathroom. “Is your guest here, Addison?”
“Matt, that voice from beyond would be Kylie.” I said to him before yelling, “Kylie, don’t be rude, get your butt down here.”
“I’m coming, I’m coming. I was just finishing my hair.”
Kylie came bouncing into the kitchen, stopping short right before Matt, extending out her hand and formally introducing herself. Judging from the look on her face, it was obvious she was taken by his good looks. “It’s really a pleasure to meet you, Matt. We've heard many wonderful things about you. Thanks for looking after Addison for us.”
“Please, the pleasure’s all mine.” Matt glanced at me. “You have an incredible big sister. She really loves the two of you.”
“She tries.” Kylie giggled. “Oh, say cheese!” She whipped her Droid phone from her back pocket and snapped a picture of Matt and I.
“Jesus, Kylie, you could have warned us.” I complained.
“Pose.” Commanded Kylie, rolling her eyes.
Matt and I and stood closer together, putting an arm around one another and smiling as another flash went off.
“Much better,” Kylie said.
“Can you send that to me, Kylie?” Matt asked.
“Of course.” Matt recited his number to Kylie and she punched it into her phone and sent the picture message to him.
When the two of them were through, I interjected before she made things even more awkward. “Kylie, let’s go set the table.” I tugged her arm, pulling her toward the china closet, shooing the boys out of the kitchen, and back to the living room, where shortly after a football game came blasting from the TV. Kylie pulled four dishes from the china cabinet as I pulled out some of our Grandmother’s cloth napkins and silver flatware and we set two places on each side of the square table.
