Mia's POV
~~~~~~~~~
I take in a deep breath as I first step inside the gate of The Centre Of Humanity. Cass is on one side and Mother is on the other."You ready?" Cass asks.
I roll my eyes. "If you ask me this one more time, I'm going to kill myself."
"Why would you kill yourself? Again? You know you'll be sent straight away to hell," Cass scolds.
"Gee, I was just joking. Relax."
"C'mon, dear, they're calling your number," Mother says.
"Number 230, please proceed to The List Gate. Number 230, please proceed to The List Gate." A women's voice rings through the air.
"Go, go, dear. Well be waiting by the entrance, now quick," Mother urges and Cass waves her hand good-bye.
I walk and stop in front of two huge doors with the sign 'The List Gate' on top of it. I shake the unwanted thoughts away from my head and walk past the doors in front of me.
A small gasp falls for my lips as I take in the building structure before my eyes. It's organized, very well.
"From here, ma'am," A guard says and ushers me inside a huge room with a cherry wood desk in the middle of it. The office is lined with huge, tall, spotless windows. Well, wow.
Madele Rulph walks in and sits down elegantly on the chair behind the desk. Her back sharp straight, her hair straightened into perfection. She is the type of person who looks like a pro at what she does.
"Good morning, Mia Grandover." She smiles a little, not showing her teeth. I shift uncomfortably in my chair.
"Good morning," I say.
"Lets get this done with, shall we?" She raises a perfectly plucked eyebrow.
I nod. Madele Rulph isn't someone you might wish to say no to.
She hands her secretary -or whatever the hell she is- an inch of papers clipped together neatly in a file, for which she gives to me.
"This, Mia, is your list," she says the words I had feared the most.
"What do I do?" I ask.
She smile, as if expecting the question. "The Alive ones do not know that we exist, and they shall not know. You'll meet everyone in your list randomly on Earth. Yes, we'll be sending you there to meet them in person, know their character and sort a plan to their death. Based on the character, of course. You are not to do any mistake, because remember if one makes a mistake we all make a mistake. If one fails, then failure fall upon all of us. It should be very well planned, Miss Grandover. Make sure not to spill anything about us, that would be betrayal. It's all for the sake of humanity. We were defined to make this, to accomplish it. No matter what you do, everyone in this list dies in the same time written on the sheets on your lap. The setting doesn't matter, but the time does. Once you finish the task in hand, you'll be free to do whatever you want with the rest of your life. But please do take in consideration, that you should not develop any emotional feelings on the characters. In case any of this happens, you must inform The Centre Of Humanity. We'll take care of it in a blink of an eye. But the most important thing is to abide by the system, by the rules."
I stand up from the chair and move to shake hands with her. "Thank you," I say.
She smile, this time showing her pearly white teeth. "No, thank you."
I make my way toward the door. "Oh and, Mia?"
I turn around. "Yes?"
"Good luck, you're going to need it."
I nod and walk out of the room before she says anything else.
"Well?" Mother says at the kitchen table. I put my napkin down.
"It went well," I say plainly.
"When are you leaving? For Earth, I mean?" She leans across the table.
"In two weeks time. I'll go and stay for a month then come back again, take rest and then go back there again for another month."
"Wow. What if you finished all of your work in the first month?"
"Well, then I can do whatever the hell I want with the rest of my life." My dead life, I added in my head then brushed the thought away.
"I'm proud of you, Mia. But don't swear."
I take a fork full of pasta then pat the corners of my mouth with the napkin.
"I'm going to sleep," I say after a while.
"Aren't you going to watch TV with me?" Mother asks.
"I'm really tired, Mother." Her face drops in disappointment. God, guilt is eating me. "But I'm going to stay awake with you to watch whatever TV show you had in mind."
I stumble across the bathroom, my eyesight laced with sleep. I do my necessities and walk straight to bed.
I really wish I'll finish my list during the first month and get it over with. Without another thought clouding my mind, I fall asleep.
