The words that escaped his lips over the phone with a slight chuckle gave me a sigh of relief, forgetting for a second that Connor was there. I covered it up with a yawn, but I knew it made it even worse.
"Why would you even- why are you-," I groaned, lost for words. Knowing my best friend would be in this. I told her that I was done with him and she hasn't spoken to me about- that sneaky little monkey. She was quiet about Connor this whole time because she was setting this stupid thing up that worked. How did I not notice that?
"Jealous, are we?" I felt a smirk in his voice. This is the Connor that made me hate him, but yet like him. Confusing, I don't even understand it, but I kinda miss it.
"No, I am not. You just left me confused with saying 'you need to eat well for tonight's double date.' and then a letter at the same time?"
"Oh, so you were eavesdropping weren't you?!" He laughed. Again, I was lost for words. Smart mouth. He was probably prepared for this conversation. He knew what I was going to say. Loser.
"How can I not listen to you idiots when you're obviously louder than the movie? I have to rewatch it now because you both got me confused and I wasn't paying attention to what I was watching." I slight whine. Realizing that I whined, I felt like a child. I cleared my throat and promised to sound like an adult.
"You could have turned your volume higher like you did when I was walking up to Andrea's room." He said.
"It was the loudest it could go Connor." I said. "You are the loudest person I have ever met in my entire life."
"You are the nosiest person I have ever met in my entire life." He mocked.
"See, this is what I mean. I don't want to talk to you because I end up getting frustrated with you." I sighed, rubbing my temples and turning off the TV.
"Take a joke for once An." An? Since when did he comfortable enough to call me by An?
"How can I take a joke when I'm talking to someone I'm not friends with?" I regret the words that came out of my mouth. I tried to listen for something on the other line but nothing. "I'm sorry," I sighed. "This was my fault this time. I'm going to get some sleep. I appreciate the effort into talking to me tonight." As I pulled the phone away from my ear, I hear mumbling from my phone as I put it up to my ear.
"Wait, wait. This wasn't why I was calling you. I just wanted you to warm up to me and it clearly didn't work." He said.
"Okay." I said silently.
"I meant what I said in the letter. I messed up a lot, and it took me by surprise to have you cry instead of fighting back. I'm not a person that has ever opened up to someone so easily and I don't know, I just felt comfortable. I know you might not like me or anything but I just don't want us to end on a bad note." I heard a door close behind him. I sighed.
"I feel like you're only saying this just because I cried in front of you, and I know girls don't do that to you often." I said.
"Well that made me notice how much of a dick I was... or am."
"I understand that, but I feel like you don't want to do it just because you want to, but because you want to do the right thing." He was left speechless.
Who's the smart mouth now?
"Yeah." He sighed. "But I am willing to try to rebuild a connection with you." I stayed quiet, thinking of an answer.
Conscience, help me.
What if you're just going to have a repeat of what happened when you started dating him?
