Luminous rays of light peeked through the drawn curtains, so bright it caused Nathan to toss around his bed draping his duvet over his head. The attempt to dodge the morning light may have worked but the screeching noise formally knows as his father's voice bellowed in the air.
"Nathan! At this rate we're going to miss our flight!" His father's voice cackled
Nathan groaned whilst he flipped to his backside and stared at the ceiling. His father may enjoy spending his free time helping others but he didn't. His father, George, worked for a non profit charity company. He invested his time into this company by organizing fundraising techniques. The second he heard about Haiti's tragedy he busied himself with work, organizing endless fundraising scheme. This was until yesterday when George decided to book a ticket for him and his son to Haiti to actually make a change.
Nathan finally managed to get up from his bed and get ready. His bag was already packed with his essentials. He strolled down the narrow staircase still sulking about making this trip.

George sat beside Nathan in the plane, his hands clutching a newspaper which was positioned at eye level. He peered through his thickly rimmed glasses and glanced at the article before him. The big bold title printed on the newspaper snatches anyone's attention to read the devastating news.
A massive earthquake has struck the Caribbean nation if Haiti.
George's eyes scanned the title, slowly taking in each word as his heart ached at the tragedy. His eyes continued to dart across the paper, often stopping at various sentences. The sentences circled his head with sorrow, echoing repeatedly.
....Haiti's worst quake in two centuries hit south of the capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, wrecking the presidential palace, UN HQ and other buildings
.....The Red Cross says up to three million people have been affected......
..."You have thousands of people sitting in the streets with nowhere to go. There are people running, crying, screaming."
George let out a silent sigh and neatly folded the newspaper, positioning it on his lap. He glanced at Nathan who was staring out the plane window with strop. One head phone was dangling out his chest whilst the other was plugged in his ear. George could faintly hear the beat of the song. The rest of the plane journey seemed to be as silent as it began.

The blistering air directed from the scorching sun clung on Nathan's skin, flushing it with a pink shade. He fetched his darkly tinted sunglasses out from his side bag and slipped it on. He followed his dad's lead and descended the airport stairs.
A darkly tanned plump man stood outside clutching a white card. His dad's name was printed in big bold Arial letters. Nathan let out a cynical laugh and walked towards his man. George glanced behind to see his son going the other direction. He creased his eyes and briefly caught the white card. A sense of relief flushed inside him due to the rapid movements.
George caught up with Nathan and within minutes they were inside the car. The car hauled of to a speedy start which made Nathan smile for the first time. George however clung onto his seatbelt wearing a look of concern. Nathan plopped on both his headphones and increased the volume.
After what seemed like forever to Nathan the car came to an abrupt halt. The sand surfaced beneath the tyres rose up in the air, dancing with wind with its new freedom.
George settled the charge and grabbed their belongings. He looked over at the destroyed view before. The houses demolished to the floor and the crops flattened. The few Haiti civilians were lying on the heated sand either crying for their loved ones or wincing with pain.

Once Nathan and George got settled inside a small tent George left to ask the Red Cross for a progress report. Several minutes past and Nathan already grew bored. He grabbed his IPod and left to wander around.
Nathan wandered in circles taking in his new surroundings, he felt slightly guilty for his unsympathetic approach. He never quite understood the severity of the earthquake, the damage it's caused, the lives it's ruined.
After an hour of wandering, he came across a deserted area. It was evidently a building that collapsed. The bricks formed a huge huddle or a tiny mountain. He climbed a few rocky bricks, making sure to balance. He found a spot to settle on. He fetched his IPOD out and pressed it on. Just before punching the play button, a few bricks moved and toppled off from the tip of the mountain. Nathan spun around to see the last brick surfacing beneath his feet. He simply shrugged and refocused on his IPOD.
Again for the second time, Nathan hesitated to press the play button. This was because the sound he just heard shocked him. Was it real or did he just imagine it?
He strained his ears and listened out for any noise.
The eerie silence echoed loudly making Nathan nervous.
There! He just heard it again
A short shrilling groan escaped into the air. Nathan climbed down the tiny mountain and glared it from a distance. His eye caught a tiny hole. He edged closer and peered though the hole
"Hello!" Nathan yelled
He waited a few minutes and just when he about to give up a faint croaky voice replied
"Hello, is someone there?" the voice croaked
Holy Shit! Nathan thought, there were civilians underneath the pile of bricks he just sat on!
