Mark's POV
We arrived back at my house with the groceries. Jack and I took a few bags each out of the car and entered the front door. The minute we walked through I heard rushed footsteps approaching the hallway.
"Where have you been? Mars and back? We haven't got long until the movie starts; you better hurry up if you still want to come. We are leaving in about 10 minutes", Ryan complained.
"Sorry buddy, we got a little... distracted", I said, smiling at Jack. The Irishman returned my gaze and giggled.
Ryan's stern expression quickly became soft and then turned into a devilish grin.
"Look guys, can't date time wait until we are at the movie? Plus, the store doesn't seem like the most romantic place", he taunted. He shot a smirk in my direction and my eyes grew wide.
"N-no, no it-it's not-", I began to stutter.
"Yeah, sure it's not...", Ryan sarcastically echoed down the hallway as he walked away.
I avoided eye contact with Jack and we stood in an awkward silence for a while. Suddenly, I felt my face grow warm. I cleared my throat and gestured to Jack to follow me into the kitchen, hoping he wouldn't notice the red in my cheeks. After we set down the bags on the floor, I caught a black nose rustling around in one of them. "Chica...", I groaned. Chica's nose shot out of the bag and her guilty eyes focused on me. Jack giggled at her antics while he helped me put away the groceries. I felt so bad that he was helping out so much when he was meant to be the guest but I knew he'd only protest if I said no. Once we'd put everything away I saw Jack pick up the bag of cookies and brought him, he swiftly tore open the packet and took two. I know he's been dying to get into those ever since he saw them in the store. He glanced up at me, then back at the packet before holding out the bag to offer me one. I shook my head but thanked him; I wanted him to enjoy them.
I saw blonde hair appear around the doorframe of the kitchen out the corner of my eye and turned around to see Matt, then followed by Ryan. Ryan told me he'd fed Chica and they asked if we were ready to go, I thanked him and nodded in response. Then I turned to the green-haired man. He was about to say he was ready but stopped, like a light bulb had appeared above his head. Jack dashed out of the kitchen and up the stairs. Matt, Ryan and I exchanged confused glances but quickly stopped when he reappeared with his wallet.
"You don't need to bring that, I'll pay", I insisted.
"Don't be stupid, you know how kind you've been letting me stay here and taking me everywhere", Jack responded.
"I'll take you're offer Mark", Matt broke in.
"It wasn't for you", I retorted, rolling my eyes. This caused him to huff and fold his arms.
"Mark seriously, its fine. Let's get going or we'll miss the movie and they'll be nothing to pay for in the first place", Jack said. I reluctantly let it go and we made our way to the door. The cinema was only a few blocks away so we were going to walk instead of taking the car.
On our way to the cinema, the sun was beginning to set and it cast shadows on the pavement from the houses that lined the streets. Matt and Ryan were walking together in front of me and Jack who were trailing behind them. I looked over at the slightly smaller man and found myself studying him. He seemed fine but I couldn't help but worry about him after the events of this morning. If he'd have fallen down that cliff I don't know what I'd have done. We haven't known each other a great deal of time, especially not face to face, but he means a lot to me. Suddenly, he noticed I was staring at him.
"What? Do you like what you see?", he teased, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Ye- err I mean, s-sorry. I j-just wanted to ask if you are having a good time so far. Even after what happened this morning?", I stuttered.
"Sure am, this has been the best trip ever. Stop worrying about this morning you goof, like I said before it's in the past now and I want to remember the good parts of it", he replied sincerely.
"Good. I'm glad you are having a nice time. We haven't even got to the best part yet either", I said as I placed a hand on his back.
I was relieved by his reply. We continued walking as I hoped nothing would go wrong for the rest of Jack's visit here.
