Chapter XVII
Dragons and parties
Months had passed since Sarben's last attack and he was learning more and more spells as quick as the hours in a day allowed him. He had mastered the spell of growth, which encouraged the growth of plant life. He had not yet mastered animal growth yet and Daarken and I ran away before he could try it on either of us.
The weather became warmer as the end of the year drew nearer and soon it was Daarken's birthday. I had to work with Sarben to make him a present without him noticing. It was very difficult since Daarken went anywhere we did. We had to get Lianra to help us out with making us all do chores but teaming Sarben up with me.
"Why must I do it alone but they get each other's help?" Daarken whined as Lianra handed him a fishing pole one day to fish out in the harbour. "I will be by myself for hours."
"You are much too strong and brave to need any help from them, when you are a rider you will not need their help, yes?" Lianra said, manipulatively.
Daarken opened his mouth but shut it again. He couldn't think of anything to say to that. Sarben and I waved as Daarken left sadly by himself to spend a whole day fishing.
"He is so cute when he is upset like that." Lianra giggled, her nose scrunching up.
"Ew, Lianra." Sarben groaned, squinting his eyes and pulling a face of disgust.
"I do not mean it like that," Lianra laughed before looking at me and smirking, "But I bet Akaiya does."
I felt my face go red and I turned away from them, "Do not pest me with such disgusting matters! Daarken is such an idiot as if I would ever think of something like that!" I shouted, folding my arms defensively.
Lianra laughed harder and Sarben joined in, "That would explain why even though you are turned away I can still see that your ears are as red as the lava in Arimur volcano." He teased and I covered my face with my hands.
Daarken was just my friend, why did they have to be so annoying? Although I did wish I could have joined him fishing. Not because I wanted to spend time with him, because I wanted to push him in the water... of course.
Once Sarben and Lianra had finished laughing their heads off their bodies, Sarben and I went outside to begin our project. We had wanted to use Sarben's magic to grow a little tree for Daarken in the backyard but it failed terribly after hours of hard work.
"Why can we not just find a dragon egg for him; that would make him beyond happy." I groaned, dropping to the floor with defeat as the withering twig of a tree in front of us fell over.
"To do that would involve travelling to Arimur volcano and searching through the dragon's nests or going even further down to the God's volcanoes or anywhere else across Arveltri to their lairs. It is a suicide mission." Sarben ticked off each suggestion with a finger before finishing dramatically.
I stuck my tongue out at him, "Why do we not just ask one of the dragon's if Daarken can ride them, just once?"
Sarben looked at me as if I had just asked him to reveal his backside to the King and Queen. "They would never agree to that!"
I groaned, standing up. "If you will not help me then I shall go by myself." I stormed inside the house and collected some things I needed for a journey.
I left the house with my bow, quiver, some food and a blanket. Sarben stepped out of the house once I walked down the front garden, following after me. "I did not think you were serious!" He called, running after me.
"So you are coming?" I said as Sarben caught up to me. He was holding his book, he never went anywhere without it.
"I suppose I have to. This present is from both of us." He said grimly, clutching the book with one arm close to his body.
