A/N: Got this idea from a tumblr post. Basically, Cas can't fall asleep because he's too afraid of it, and of course, Dean is taking care of him

Deans sleep got interrupted by Sam knocking on his door. "Mmphr" Dean grunted as response and buried his face in his pillow. Sam pulled a bitch face before he entered Deans room with one step.

"Cas is sitting in the kitchen and he looks like he's about to cry any second." Sam informed Dean. With a deep sigh, Dean turned around and pushed himself up, so he was sitting now.

One eye still closed, the other one barely opened he replied

"And? Man, it's-" he took a look at the clock before he looked back to Sam "like 3am. I need my sleep Sammy." Sam nodded shortly, but didn't left.

"It's just, I think you can calm him better than I can, with you two sharing your profound bond or how you want to call it. He just really needs you, at least the first nights."

Dean understood and accepted, not pleased though. Sam left the room with a plain "Goodnight" and vanished in his room. Dean saw the lights coming from the kitchen, so he approached it, barefooted and only wearing some sweatpants. As Dean walked in, he was facing the back side of Cas, who had his arms around his knees, while sitting on the cold kitchen floor, making silent, sobbing noises. Dean felt bad for being so annoyed earlier; it must be really hard for his buddy.

"Uh, hey Cas" Dean greeted him, one hand rubbing his own neck nervously. Why was he nervous? It took a while before Cas looked up.

"Hey Dean" he sniffed before resting his head on his knees once again. Slowly, Dean walked up to Cas and placed himself right next to him.

"Can't sleep, huh?" Dean asked, even though the answer was obvious, but he wanted to start a conversation.

"Mhm" Cas made an agreeing sound. "I'm just... I don't know. I don't get how sleeping works, I guess. Also I am..." he made a break and as he finished the sentence he was only whispering, just loud enough for Dean to understand "afraid."

He sniffed again. Dean pressed his lips together to keep an "ooww" sound to himself. Dean swung an arm around Cas shoulder and pushed him closer to him.

"It's gonna be alright, someday. I promise." Dean said. He quickly thought about it: How could he make it easier for Cas to fall asleep? "Hey, want some warm milk? It always helps me." Dean offered with a warm smile, but Cas simply shook his head. "Okay, uh, have you tried counting sheep?" Cas nodded and looked up to face Dean now.

"I stopped at 1458. I didn't see a further point in it." Dean pulled an impressed, yet confused expression at once. Man, Cas is really having some trouble. With a sigh, Dean confessed

"Well, when I was a kid, the only thing that helped me was my...mother singing to me. She has- had a really beautiful voice, you know? She always sang me her favourite song and I still know it by heart." Dean finished with a sad smile. He wasn't sure why he was telling Cas, he really wasn't. Cas expression changed, it became kinda...hopeful.

"Dean?" Cas asked in an innocent voice.

"Yeah?" Dean simply replied.

"Can you sing to me?" Dean pulled his eyebrows together and stared intensely at Cas. Was Cas really asking for that? Dean thought about it...for a while. Slowly the silence between them became uncomfortable, just as the arm around Cas shoulder became more awkward. Finally, Dean sighed.

"I guess I can do that. But I will hear one laugh, you'll have to sleep outside, understood?"

Cas nodded a bit too fast and a bit too excited, like a child who's about to get it's Christmas presents. Dean removed his arms around Cas shoulder to get up. He offered a hand to Cas, to help him standing up. Side by side they walked back to Cas' room. They didn't bother to turn on the light, Cas just hushed into his bed and cuddled himself into the blanket. Dean couldn't help but smile at that. Why is this grown man so freaking cute, he thought to himself. It was kind of awkward for Dean; he didn't know how to begin. Should he stand or sit on his bed? He decided to go with the second one. Cas made some space for him and Dean sat there, right next to him. Cas had closed his eyes and waited for Dean to start. Dean quickly cleared his throat before he began to sing.

Hey Jude, don't make it bad

take a sad song and make it better

Remember to let her into your heart

then you can start to make it better

Cas lips curled into a pleased smile. He enjoyed to hear Dean singing, he has a beautiful voice.

Hey Jude, don't be afraid

You were made to go out and get her

The minute you let her on to your skin

Then you begin to make it better

Cas started to cuddle himself against Dean, but Dean didn't mind.

And any time you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain

Don't carry the world upon your shoulders

well don't you know that it's a fool who plays it cool

by making his world a little colder

Cas' head was now lying in Deans lap, and Dean found himself stroking Cas' hair. Cas lips were still smiling and it made Dean happy, too. Dean found himself being too tired to continue singing and he was almost sure Cas was already asleep. So he just closed his eyes, his fingers slowing their movements in Cas' hair, but remaining there. He fell asleep with the hopeful thought of doing this now every time Cas would've trouble falling asleep, which would be almost every night. With a smile, he drifted away into a calm sleep.
