"I never understood this, Dean. Also, I never really liked it, it is so loud up in heaven when the whole of humanity is trying to kill us with their loud, exploding rockets" Cas told Dean, as he let himself fall back on the sofa, arms crossed before his chest. Dean and Sam looked at each other, both a questioning expression on their face. It didn't take long for them to laugh though.
"Cas, let me explain you something." Dean began as he slowly sat down next to the angel, who now pulled his lower lip over his upper one, he was pouting. "New year is the only holiday that brings me some kind of joy. Look, we ain't trying to kill no angels, the rockets are just there for the colours and...stuff. C'mon, it'll be fun." Dean gently punched Cas' shoulder, but Cas didn't move, didn't react.
Sam has already left the room, laughing over Cas. Dean heard him typing something on his laptop in the next room. He sighed, Sam would end up getting married to that thing. Dean concentrated his thoughts back on Castiel who has now lowered his arms to fumble with his treanchoat sleeves. His pouting face stayed though, and Dean found himself smiling about that. As he realized what he was thinking about he quickly shook it off.
"I...I don't know Dean." Cas finally broke the silence between them.
"Cas?" Dean asked in response, and finally, Castiel looked up, looked right back at Dean. Dean always found himself getting lost in Cas' eyes and a wave of joy overcame him when he watched the bright, blue colour of it, but he still hasn't figured out why. Castiel slightly tilt his head; he was waiting for Dean to go on. "Cas, do you trust me?" Dean finished. Cas eyes squished shortly and then he furrowed his eyebrows.
"Of course I trust you Dean." He stated. Dean nodded shortly before he got up and grabbed Cas' shoulder to drag him up, too.
"Good, then follow me."
With a look on Cas' watch, Dean assured himself that he had enough time to do everything. There were about 15 minutes left until midnight. He dragged Cas along with him. First, to get Sam away from his laptop to help them. Dean gave each of them a task: Sam was responsible to get some alcohol and glasses for a new years drink outside. Dean made himself responsible to get the fireworks out of his room, he bought them a while ago, and to set them up. Cas simply had to follow Dean around, always telling him when another minute has passed.
It only took about 10 minutes until everyone was dressed warm enough and they were waiting outside, firework all set up, each of them holding a glass with some whiskey. Yeah, it's not the usual drink for new year, but who cares? Dean had his lighter ready in his hand, the anticipation growing with every second.
"Cas?" Dean asked for the millionth time. Cas looked at "his" wristwatch again. Well, technically it was his, Sam found it in the bunker and said he had no use for it so Castiel called dips on it.
"About 3 minutes Dean." Sam walked around the firework, checking if Dean had put everything neatly and Dean rolled his eyes at that.
"...Dean?" Cas asked unsure.
"Yeah?" Dean led his stare from Sam to Cas. "Are there any other new year traditions I may have to follow?" Dean had to think about that, what exactly do you do on new year?
"Uh, man I don't know. Firework, good wishes for everybody, maybe a drink. Is there anything else?" Dean thought out loud, hoping for Sammy to help him. Sam was kneeling to inspect the fireworks but now he stood up, looking at Dean.
"Hm, I don't know? There is also this tradition that you kiss the person you love but I don't know if you two grew some balls yet." Deans eyes widened at that and he gave Sam a glare that could kill. Sam simply chuckled, but Deans cheeks started to burn, out of anger and maybe even embarrassment.
"Dude, if you won't shut your pie hole, I'll take on of those fireworks, shove 'em up your ass and light 'em!" Sam was totally laughing now, Dean stood there with a red face and Cas was never leaving the glare off his watch.
"One minute left!" Castiel suddenly shouted, slightly jumping up and down, he was clearly excited. Dean managed to light everything with a perfect timing to everything set off on the first seconds of the new year. All of them cheered loudly. Sam and Dean forgot they little argument earlier and tightly hugged each other, wishing each other a hopeful better year. After the embrace, Dean looked at Cas. He was staring at the sky, watching the fireworks exploding with an fascinated expression and a huge grin on his face. Dean found himself smiling again, and then he raised his glare up to the sky too. Fireworks reminded him of his childhood with Sammy, at those rare moments where they forgot about all their problems and worries. He liked the colours too.
There was a red one with some white stripes exploding, right after that one came a simple white one. Sam was lighting up more and more so the sky would never be simply dark. Then a green one exploded and then there was a huge, wide and just stunning one with the brightest, deepest blue someone could imagine.
Suddenly, Dean got aware. Cas eyes was all he could think of. Every time he looked at Cas' eyes, there was so much more behind the simple, blue colour. How he could never look away, because he found it so calming, so safe and so stunning. Without even noticing it, Cas was standing right in front of him now. Dean jumped back a little, of the surprise of Cas just being inches from his face without Dean realizing. Cas had a little smile on his face and a bit more behind him, Dean saw Sam standing with a sparkler, drawing loops in the air. On new years eve, all of them just got full of happiness, even if it's just for some moments. Cas was moving closer to Dean now and before Dean could react, say something, Cas pressed his lips against Deans. After a brief moment, both of them melted into the kiss, but parted just some seconds after. Cas was holding two unlit sparklers in his left hand. With a simple, controlled move, his right hand moved into Deans jeans pocket and grabbed Deans lighter. He lit the sparklers and handed one to Dean, who was still speechless. Sam was making some triumphing movements and jumps in the background while pointing at them, but Dean ignored it. Each of them holding a sparkler, Cas kissed Dean again, just a quick peck. They leaned their foreheads against each other before Dean breathed out "Happy new year, Cas."
"IT WAS ABOUT FUCKING TIME" they heard Sam yell from afar, but now, neither of them could care less.
