Breaking History

In my state for 4a there is this band that always wins. At state semifinals they broke 90 for the first time in school history. The band in 2nd place has been right on their tails for years. Consistently less than a point away, but never able to snag that first place slot. But last night at state finials it happened. They won. There were tears of joy. There was so much happiness in the band. They were crying because the seniors had their last performance and they finially won. Old band members tend to come back to watch state and they were also in tears of joy. The band stayed on that football field for the longest time and would have slept there if they could've. The band that normally wins rushed in to congratulate the band and gave hugs. It was beautiful. I've never seen such band joy in the world. Both 1st place and 2nd place broke 90 for the first time in the history of their schools. The parents went ballistic when the band that normally gets first place was announced as second. The two bands were standing next to eachother. And they looked at each other and they saw joy and friendship. The finial scores were 90.3 in first place and 90.25 in second. They only won by .05 points, but the gold medals and the trophy. And the fact that they could go back to school and say they won and not that they got runner up for state champion. That they are state champions made them not care. Competition between the two bands will be so tight next year, but it was a beautiful moment. One of the seniors in band had a birthday that day and turned 18. Another had lost his grandmother the day before. So many individual stories because of how real this is. It made a good day amazing and a bad day good. Everyone, even the other 5a 3a and 2a bands knew about the rivalry and how big of a deal it was that the reigning champion for 12 years had finially been conquered, and they were happy for their conquerors. This is what band is. A competitive family.
