Chapter One
"It's positive." my best friend Ryan said with a blank expression.
Tears immediately began rushing down my cheeks. "What am I going to do Ryan? I'm 18! I can't have a baby. I just started college." I cried harder as he hugged me.
"I don't know Madeline. We'll figure it out though." He said reassuringly. Ryan hardly ever used my full name. He only used it when he was being serious or he was mad. It was usually Maddy or Madz.
I hugged him tight and sat down on his bathroom floor.
"Hey Alex?" He sat down next to me and asked quietly.
I looked up at him and asked "Yeah?"
"Who's baby is it?" He got nervous and began twiddling with his thumbs.
"Joe's." I said in a quiet whisper.
He gasped and looked down at me.
"When did that happen Madeline!?" He almost yelled sounding really angry.
"His birthday party. After you dragged me there and left me by myself I kinda stood around awkwardly. A very drunk Joe started hitting on me and we went up to a bedroom and it kind of just happened." I said getting sad again.
He pulled me into a hug. Ryan is the only person who knew about my feelings for Joe. I'd been friends with him since I moved here in the 7th grade. Joe and I never really hit it off. He and I hung out, but never without Ryan. The party was 2 months ago so the baby is pretty small I guess.
"Ryan I think I'm going to go. I should really talk to my dad about this." I said walking into his room and getting my bag.
"Okay Madz. Call or just come over if you need anything."
I nodded and smiled and he kissed my forehead.
The walk home wasn't bad being that Ryan and I live down the street from each other (9 houses down from each other to be exact) but Joe lived right in the middle. Passing his house made me get all emotional.
I was only a child when I moved to Astoria with my parents for my mom's treatement. She had cancer and passed away two years ago.
Saying I was a daddy's girl was a understatement. We were all we had left in the world.
I knew he'd be upset but he would support me.
I walked in the house, into the kitchen and sat on the counter watching my dad make dinner.
He didn't even look at me to know something was wrong, he could just tell from my silentness and bad vibes.
"Whats wrong Maddy?" he asked.
"I messed up dad. I'm really sorry. Please don't be mad." he put down his pan of lasagna and turned around to look at me.
"What happened? Do I need to hide a body? Do we need to pack up and move to Yemen? he joked, making me smile.
"I'm having a baby." I said with all of the joy being flushed out of my body.
His smile quickly changed and he looked disappointed.
"No god please don't give me that look. I know, believe me I know how badly I messed up. But I want to do what's right now. I'm so sorry." I said tears starting to roll down my cheek.
"I'm not mad nor upset. I'm a little surprised but I know you and I know you'll make the right decision. Now I don't want any details but who's the father?" he asked. I let out a huge sigh of relief when he told me he wasn't angry.
"Ryan's friend. Joe, the one who lives a few houses over." I said while hopping down to get a plate of lasagna.
"At least I know I'll have a cute grandchild!" he smiled.
I was so relieved, but petrified about what I was going to do with Joe.
Ryan's POV
Maddy found out about her baby a month ago and she was starting to show a little. You could see her tiny bump but only if she pointed it out.
Right now her and I were outside washing my car. It was pretty nice in New York because it was the end of May. Joe pulled up into my driveway probably coming home from work being that he lives 4 housed down and he could have just walked.
I've barely talked to him since I found out. I was angry that he was stupid and used Maddy when she was vulnerable.
He was a player and Maddy, as much as people would think she's whored around, had only kissed two people before. One being me because we tried to see if we had feelings for each other once. We didn't at all.
"What the fuck Ryan." he said coming out of his car.
Maddy jumped a little when she heard the car door slam and cowered behind me slightly as he walked up. "You've barely talked to me for a month now and you're always bailing on our SDK meetups we have! he said harshly. "What's going on?" he said a little more calm but still pretty loud.
"I'm pretty fucking mad at you for being a douche!" I spat back.
I could feel Maddy tense up and I feel bad for her right now.
"Whatever. Dude Acacia is having a party tonight! Lets go, there'll be tons of hot girls. You can even bring Maddy along. She's quite fun at parties."
He winked.
I couldn't stand it anymore. Without realizing what I was doing I punched Joe in the stomach.
"Ryan!" Maddy screamed as Joe tumbled back holding his stomach.
"That's it, I'm done Abe! Drive yourself to school!" he spat getting back into his car.
I turned and pulled Maddy into a hug as she began crying again.
I won't let him hurt her. She deserves better.
