Chapter Ten
Maddy's POV
"Shhhhhh baby." I whispered to Aria who was crying hysterically. I couldn't seem to calm her down. I was getting so frustrated because Joe was out with Ryan and Joey and had been out since around 9 earlier this evening. It was now 1 a.m. and I could not get her to sleep.
She's had a fever for the past few days and I didn't even think that it had to do with her crying. She started coughing and spitting up and then I started to panic.
I called the non-emergency number and asked what to do.
"What are her symptoms ma'am." she said.
"High fever, vomiting, coughing, stiffness." I replied.
"How does she react when you turn on the light or take her outside?"
I bit my nail before replying.
"She starts to fuss again..."
"Mrs. Santagato, we'd like you to bring her in please. This could be potentially serious."
I said okay and thanked them before hanging up the phone and dialing Joe's number.. By then I was crying and he wouldn't pick up. I left him an angry voice mail telling him I was taking Aria to the Emergency Room and for him to call me asap.I also called Ryan and Joey but their phones were off.
I dried my eyes and put Aria in her carrier, tied a blanket around her and out her in the car. She settled downs little in the car and seemed to fall asleep.
When we got there, the lady was waiting for us. She gave me paperwork and took Aria.
All I could think was "Where the hell is Joe?"
"Are you Aria's mother?" A lady asked after what seemed like forever.
I nodded yes.
"Come with me."
"Oh baby." I said looking at Aria hooked up to an IV and a heart monitor.
"What's going on?" I asked, trying not to sob.
"We think your daughter might have meningitis We'd have to run a few more tests but we will need to do that immediately. This illness is life threatening." She seemed so calm and all I could think about was losing my baby.
I nodded.
"Is her father here? He has to sign the papers as well allowing us to test her and to possibly give her medication." she said.
"I actually have no idea where he is." I said honestly.
"Okay well, please come with me and we'll try and get in contact with him."
I followed her down a narrow hall when I saw Ryan standing outside a door.
"Ryan?!" I yelled.
"Oh thank god! Did you get my call?" he asked, gripping my shoulders.
"Your call? No! Did you get my call?!" I yelled.
He shook his head. "No. Then why are you here?"
"Where's Joe?" I demanded. He turned to face the door and I walked in to find him putting on his shirt.
"What the hell?!" I yelled.
"Shhh." he whispered pointing to his head.
"Babe are you okay?" I asked kissing him on the lips.
"I uh, I got alcohol poisoning." he whispered.
"WHAT!" I yelled.
He flinched at the noise.
