I wanted to ask Dec to meet me after class to plan for the presentation. But before I even open my mouth, Dec said, "Hey, would you like to meet with us after class? And show me around campus, if you don't mind."
"Sure mate! I'll see you after 6 near the cafeteria. My next class ends at 6." I told him. He looked a little disappointed after hearing that.
"See you then." Dec said as he left. Before he did though, he flashed a smile. A smile I'll never get used to. I smiled back and waved.
My next class ended early. I checked the time as it was still half passed 5. I went straight to the cafeteria to wait for my classmate. To my surprise, there he was. Sitting alone in the bench, under the shade of the tree, reading a book, was Dec. I stood in awe as I took in the picture. He looks so perfect just sitting there, I thought. What am I thinking? He's just a friend, I think, who I admire. Admire? Is that the word for it? Damn, I should know better.
It took me a few seconds, which felt like an eternity, before I finally went up to Dec and sat next to him.
"Wow! You're early," I said.
"Yeah, Psych was my last class for the day and I didn't have anywhere else to go."
"Oh, that's why."
"That's why what?" Dec questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"That's why you were disappointed." It was too late before I realized. After class, I have been thinking of why Dec was disappointed. I was thinking of Dec! I looked away immediately, embarrassed. I'm like a fucking teenage girl acting like this.
Dec smiled. Of course he's smiling! He must think I'm funny and crazy!
"Yeah, I was disappointed I won't be spending more time with you." Dec said, looking at me. I couldn't help but smile. I think my smile reached from ear to the other ear.
"Don't you worry, mate. We have a month to spend together for the presentation."
"Only a month?" Dec asked.
"Well, yes! We only got that to prepare for the report."
"How about after the report?" Dec asked with eagerness in his voice. What does he mean? I thought to myself. "Sure, we could still spend time together." I said.
Dec just smiled. I still wonder what he meant by that, after the report. "So? Are we planning for the report? Or the tour?" Dec asked as he kept his book in his bag.
"We still have a lot of time to prepare," I said laughing. "How about, I show us around. What were you reading by the way?"
"Nothing really, just Sherlock Holmes."
"So you like mystery, thriller and detective stories I presume?"
"I love them. Especially the crazy twists in the plot. When the protagonist reveals the missing piece of the riddle, the story became even more confusing..." I listened to Dec as he was eagerly telling me about his book.
"This is the library," I interrupted Dec. "If you were looking for me, you'd always find me in the library, history section, of course. You would find me reading an old dusty book about civilization long ago and what life was like." I ended hoping not to bored Dec but he was listening. Like a curious kid wanting to know more. Then we went to the next building. "So, what happens next?" I asked Dec about the Sherlock story.
We toured the most of the buildings in the campus and ended up in the cafeteria.
"You hungry?" I asked Dec.
"Starving," he said laughing. "Had a good walk around the campus. Thank you, Ant."
"Anytime. So, what are you hungry for? We're back at the cafeteria."
"You know any Chinese?" Dec asked sheepishly.
I laughed, "I think I might know a place. Let me take you there."
"Sure, maybe we could take out and hang at yours" Dec suggested.
"Alright, we could plan for the presentation as well."
After we ordered take out, we went to my apartment. I looked at the clock and it was almost 8:30. No wonder I'm starving as well. We ate our take outs and rested a bit with a full belly.
"What an amazing day, thanks, Ant."
"I had fun too, and you're welcome." Silence filled my room. It wasn't bad and awkward, it was warm and comfortable, my favourite kind of silence, where words are unnecessary to fill the space between two people.
"So, any plans?" Dec asked being serious while staring at me, moving closer.
I looked back and swallowed hard. "What do you mean?" I asked nervously.
