She squinnied and looked back at her computer. No change. She closed one eye. Also no change. She switched the light off, turned it on again. Again no change. Emma Swan sighed, leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes. For a moment, the pain in her left eye disappeared.
A few days ago, she had felt some kind of pressure on her left eye. She had assumed it was just because of stress or something like that, but the day ago, it had started to itch and to hurt. After she had carefully asked her mother if she knew what it could be, Mary Margaret immediately had made a doctor's appointment for her daughter for the coming day.
At the oculist they found out that Emma had a conjunctivitis at her left eye. It wasn't a bad one, but she should take eyedrops four times a day for a week. And she should avoid too much body contact with others, because that conjunctivitis could be contagious.
With a bad mood, Emma had headed home. Unfortunately, she had a lot of paperwork to do. Since Storybrooke now officially existed on the map, she had to do a few formalities. But every time she started to read for more like ten minutes, her eye started to hurt like hell. And the pressure on it was unbearable too.
About lunch time, Mary Margaret came over to check on her daughter. Emma told her what the doctor had found out. "Oh, I'm sorry sweetheart. I had that once too, during the time we were all cursed for the first time." Mary Margaret grimaced. "It's annoying, I know, but luckily it will go over."
The had a little chat about how things were going on the sheriff's station - Mary Margaret was replacing Emma that day, and now also for the coming days - , but then she got a phome call from her husband, telling her that he had found out something new about a new case. That's why Mary Margaret had to leave quickly.
Emma tried to go on with her work, but after half an hour she gave up. Bugged, she went upstairs and made herself some coffee - that's what she needed now - and plunked into the sofa. Since she couldn't watch TV now, she switched on the radio and just closed eyes. After a little while, she doze off.
"Believe me, school is really annoying.". A voice that certainly belonged to a teenage boy sounded.
"Oh come on lad, you learn things for your life, what else could you ask for?" a deep voice returned.
"Um...more free time?" Someone laughed and unpacked something. "Do you understand any of this, pirate?" The boy chuckled.
After a little while, that deep voice answered: "Umm...no, not really, but I'm not the one who should understand it, I'm not the one who goes to school."
Emma smiled and slowly opened her eyes. It seemed that her two favourite men had just arrived back home.
"Killian's right, you learn something for your life." Emma said, startling the two others. They were sitting at the dining table, facing each other, convinced that the woman had been sleeping.
"Oh come on mum, you would've been the first one to skip school if you could." Henry replied.
"Why do you know me so well?" Emma chuckled, but then got serious again. "Which shouldn't mean that you should have that wish too. School's good for you."
Henry just rolled his eyes and stood up, walking towards his mother and wanting to hug her. But Emma quickly raised her hands.
"Sorry, but today I found out that I got a conjunctivitis, and it's contagious." Emma grimaced apologizing.
"What on earth is a conjuntvis?" Killian asked and came closer, looking puzzled.
"It's conjunctivitis. I had that once too, when I was little. It's some kind of eye disease." And then, the boy started to explain how exactly the virus worked - they had approached that topic a few weeks ago -, buffling the pirate even more. "But the good thing is, it goes away."
