The Valentine's Note

Chapter 36

I speed walked back the way I came from, trying my best to get as little attention as possible. Once I was out of the venue, I had my phone ready in my hand to call my mom to pick me up. She answered on the third ring.

"Mom, can you come pick me up now?" I asked.

"Ava, honey, what's wrong?" she questioned, sounding concerned.

I sniffed. "Nothing, I just feel sick. Could you pick me up?"

"Yeah, alright, I'm on my way," she said quickly and hung up.

I heard the door open behind me.

"Ava!"

I turned around to see Seth rushing down the stairs and reaching for my hands. I took a step back and looked away from him, refusing to let him see how vulnerable I was at the moment.

"Ava, what you saw back there," he said, panting. "It was not what it looked like, trust me."

"I don't care, Seth," I snapped. "It doesn't concern me in any way. You can go and stick your tongue down any girl's throat. We broke up, remember?"

"Don't say that," he said, his voice cracking. "Everything I said back there was meant for you. No one else."

"Then why is it that I find you kissing Carla a few minutes later?" I asked, uncontrollably sobbing down. My mascara was probably running down my cheek.

"I wasn't kissing her!" he exclaimed, running a hand through his hair. Wrinkles formed on his forehead due to the frustration.

"I know what I saw," I said through gritted teeth.

"Will you please just let me explain?" he pleaded.

"Fine, go on," I said, my eyes piercing his. I wanted to know what he had to say.

He inhaled before beginning, "After dedicating that song to you, I walked out of the room and towards the stands. I wanted to be left alone. After a few minutes, Carla came looking for me and she talked to me for a while to try and make me feel better and then, she tried to kiss me. I'm going to be honest with you, if this was me a few months ago, I would've gladly kissed her back but I'm not that person anymore. I was going to push her away, turn her down...but then I heard the sound of your footsteps and you were running and I knew the damage had been done."

He was breathing hard now.

"I don't know if I can trust anything you have to say anymore," I said softly.

He reached for my hands again and this time, I let him. "Please, Ava. I'm not lying. I love you."

I let my eyes meet his. I could see the tears that were forming in his eyes and it killed me on the inside. It made me want to rip my heart out.

"Yes, I did send that note to you on Valentine's Day because I wanted to make Carla jealous. I wanted her back. That's why I forced you so much to go to the Valentine's ball with me and to dance with me so that she could see all of it," he said, holding my hands tighter. "But I didn't think I'd end up falling for you. That was not part of the plan. When I continued asking you out on dates, I kept telling myself that it was because I was so dedicated in getting Carla back. I was in denial. But then, the night on the beach...Carla wasn't around, I didn't have to follow you and kiss you. But I did...because I knew that I had fallen for you."

I felt my mouth part but no words seem to be coming out.

He gave my hands a squeeze and stepped forward to cup my cheeks.

"Please, please, believe me," he said, a tear rolling down his cheek. "I know I'm an asshole and I know I don't deserve someone like you but please, please give me another chance. I promise I will make myself worthy enough for you."

I shut my eyes and took a step back.

"I can't," I whispered.

"What-what did you say?" he asked softly.

"I can't," I repeated myself. "I can't. Please just let me go."

He wasn't blinking nor was there any expression on his face. He was motionless. Swallowing, he looked down at his shoes with a nod and then, he turned around and walked back inside.
